You can definitely use GPS on the Camino, and it works great with the right app.
Take a look at this forum post I did about it. I downloaded a GPS track of the entire Camino Frances and then was able to cache the maps and view it all offline while walking. Awesome.

Re: Biarritz to St Jean de Port
You can also contact Express Bourricot and schedule a ride in one of their shared minibuses. They have a great service, and they'll pick you up right in front of Biarritz airport. We used them this past May and I highly recommend them.

There are also a couple of reviews (including mine) of the brand new guide book "Hiking The Camino de Santiago" in this forum post:

We took the Valcarlos route this past May and didn't have any problems. This section of the Camino is well-marked by little yellow signs saying "Roncevaux Par Valcarlos", rather than by painted yellow arrows. You can see a lot of pictures of this section on our blog...
I used Express Bourricot to get from Bayonne airport to St. Jean via a shared mini-bus. I highly recommend them. Send them a message via their Contact page and they'll get back to you with the times and prices they have available. http://www.expressbourricot.com/

I think it's fine to do it last-minute, but there is a bit of a difference between running and walking. I really felt it in my hips when I first switched from running. And of course you need to get used to whatever shoes you plan on walking in. The endurance you have from running will be great...
We walked May 20th to 30th starting from SJPdP and it rained on us 10 out of the 11 days. Every morning was 45-50 degrees F (7-10 C) and the highest temperature we ever saw was about 65 F (18 C).
According to Weather Underground, it rained 23 out of 31 days for the whole month.
It was cold and...
My wife and I just returned from our first 11 days on the Camino Francés, and I've posted a summary on our blog of what gear worked and what didn't. There are as many opinions on what to take with you as there are people you can ask, but maybe this will help someone in their planning...

We went from SJPdP to Roncesvalles via Valcarlos on May 20th and 21st of this year. We had rain both days. The second half of the section between Valcarlos and Roncesvalles is a long, steep uphill, mostly on dirt and grass and some small rocks. I had no problems with grip or stability in my...
Our book says there's a paved bike path into Pamplona, but it follows the river and is a lot longer. Considering the amazing amount of mud on the trails at the moment, does anyone know the exact distance of that bike path? I'm just wondering how much longer it actually is, and whether it might...
Hi, I'm the original poster.
I tracked our first day of the Camino with GPS Kit a few days ago, from SJPP to Valcarlos, just to see how the tracking works. It was 3 hrs 46 min and it used 40% of my iPhone 5 battery charge. That's an average of about 10.7% per hour.
I didn't really need to...
I've got the brand new Camino guide book "A Village to Village Guide to Hiking the Camino de Santiago" in my hot little hands, just two days before leaving for SJPP. I've done a quick review of it on our blog, which you can find here:

Yes, GPS Kit works the same way as far as caching maps goes. It has a nice interface where you can trace an area with your finger, and it'll show you how many MB of data it'll be before it downloads it. It also implies that certain map providers might have limits on the size of data that can be...
Hi Karl,
Yeah, I wasn't too clear on that. What I meant was that if you drop a waypoint, the distance and direction to it are not updated in real-time as you walk. You have to back out of the waypoint page and then go back into it again to see the updated distance and direction. Whereas with...
Thanks everyone, for the helpful info.
I started thinking about the complications here, and the timing involved, and started getting more concerned about missing the flight. So I called American Airlines to see what the price difference would be if we had to re-book the flight for the next day...
My wife and I are doing the first 12 days of the Camino starting in SJPP, and probably ending somewhere between Logroño and Burgos. We'd like to finish the last day's walking and then find transportation back to Pamplona the same day. The next morning, we'll take a train back to Madrid and fly...
I'm happy to report that the book is now available in the Amazon USA store. Mine just shipped, and will be arriving tomorrow -- two days before I leave for Paris. :-)
