    Avoiding Cruz de Ferro

We walked just past Cruz de Ferro to the little colourful stop run by the individual last Knights Templar (??) who then called us a taxi. The taxi also brought up some grocery supplies for him so that suited all of us. It was pleasant waiting for the taxi and not too long, we took it to...

    Christmas/New Year Camino…

We were on the Portuguese one Christmas/New Year. Whenever you see a bar open, eat, as there may not be another open until the next day. Christmas Day we were hungry for a long time!! Then scored a pub for a great lunch - not sure if it wasn’t really a closed occasion but they didn’t turn us...

    The Camino will be waiting...Australians

In Central Qld so we haven’t been affected as much as others. We were hopeful for October, now March…. The Camino may always be there, but we may not be. Age and health can be barriers, as I have ruefully discovered in the last six months. Second vaccine shot due in 3 weeks…. If only people...

    Meseta in March

I will be leaving Burgos March 30th 2020, will the cafes and albergues be open then in the stages to Castrojeriz? I know most will open around the 1st April, but hoped they would already be open on the meseta. Thank you.

Planning my first Camino adventure - November?

As teachers in Australia we also had this time slot. Started first of December from SJPP and finished early January. The weather was beautiful, crisp but usually sunny. Enough people to have some great company but not busy until Sarria. Many albergues were winter options rather than the bigger...

St Jean Pied du Port Booked...anyone staying at Gite Ultreia on Sept 8th 2019?

Hi Alex I am booked Orisson on September 8 after 3 nights in SJPP, staying at Bellari. I am from Qld, so will keep an eye out for you. I’ve also booked Roncevalles for the 9th. I’m flying in to Paris. :)

Planning on Walking the Camino Frances during Dec/Jan, 2018/19

We walked at that time in 2015 and had unusually fantastic weather. No problems at all except we sometimes had to walk further than we wanted as many accommodations are closed. We could always get a meal around 6 pm. You’ll probably have to do the traditional stages as the smaller villages are...

    December Camino?

We walked in December - wonderful experience. Albergues are open but further apart, sometimes we used private accomodation. Mostly brilliant sunny days and cold, perfect for walking. Carry food snacks.

    Slaughter house on route concerns

It's true. A little village somewhere after tricastella or sartia. There was blood running down the street - we kept walking. But this is rural Spain - of course there are slaughter houses.

    Heights on the Camino Frances

Thank you - I guess the fact there is a railing was a help.

    Heights on the Camino Frances

I'm not good with heights or drop offs beside the track. On a previous Camino I managed the bridge into Portomarin (not many choices there) and perhaps more difficult- the stairway to heaven at the end of the same bridge. There are three sections that I'm worried about: Napolean Route (we went...

    Ladies

Just two sets of walking clothes. Wash them each evening, sleep in the others. We walked in winter and our clothes always dried overnight on the heaters (which usually turned off about 10 pm!) Keep it simple and light. :)

WHY would you do a winter camino?

We walked our first Camino Frances December 2014, starting in SJPP, and it was beautiful. Our days were crisp and sunny in the main. Enough alburgues and bars were open - we never cooked our own meals. Fellow pilgrims were enough for camaraderie but it was never crowded. Also, being school...

    Walked in winter

On 2nd December 2014 3 women set out from SJPP. We took the Valcarlos route as the other was closed. A brutal first day, but we wouldn't have missed it. We had our little Australian cloth badges on our packs (thanks Ivor, I got them from you the previous year when I tried the Portugeuse route)...
