I just bring a bar of soap that works for my body, hair and clothes. It's off-the-shelf deodorant soap I purchase at a supermercado. Nothing special. In the past I did use liquid soap in small bottles (hotel size) and never felt a particular disadvantage with it. I acquired them at occasional...
I totally agree about not checking a pack, and for all the reasons suggested here. Wrapping a pack in plastic to check on the way home is fine, but if it's possible to carry it onboard (as I and many others do) why risk that it might get lost?
The 1/2 day prior to Santander is beautiful, with a long beach walk between Loredo and Somo. A few stages after Santander you find what is probably the most beautiful stretch on the CdN -- Ribadesella to La Isla. But the first few days after Santander are away from the beach.
I returned from...
To me, the choice of a train or a flight from Paris totally depends on timing. The goal is to get to Bayonne or Biarritz in time for an SJPP train that arrives early enough in the day to enjoy the town and get settled for your overnight.
Downhills can be quite steep. In the case of SJPP to...
My son walked his second camino last year with one of his older guitars. He's a pretty serious musician and couldn't bear to be separated from a guitar. He was known on the CF as "the American guy with the guitar" and he and his music were pretty popular. Since it was an older guitar in an older...
Nice to hear your voice, and great to see you in SdC again this year, my friend. Thanks for this great post on the Muxia route and I'm glad it went well for you.
Stay cool during the blazing Illinois summer!
You might try the Australian Friends of the Camino. http://afotc.org/ Their website isn't fully functional right now, but there's a mail contact and email is on the membership form. You can also join the Confraternity of St James in the UK and/or get a credential at the first albergue on your...
I agree with all the above and would add the Via Francigena from Canterbury to Rome http://www.francigena-international.org ... hp?lang=en.
The Lycian Way is very intriguing. Turkey is wonderful and the LW would certainly be an adventure.
The albergue system and the quantity of pilgrims on...
Thanks, Peregrina, for your great post and for news of the Amigo/a program. I arrived in SdC this year on June 25 just before the office closed and am sorry I missed you!
One comment on the credenciales for Finisterre. Last year I went to the Galician Tourist Office and was given a simple piece...
Interesting. By pavement on the Camino del Norte I mean any of the following: concrete walkways, asphalt (tarmac) roads, concrete roads, concrete or ceramic walkways along roads -- in general anything that is not a dirt, grass, gravel or sand pathway.
It may be that the views are spectacular from Col Orisson and Col Lepoeder (in clear weather), or it may be that walking this route and ending in Finisterre means pilgrims walk "all the way" across Spain, or it may be that so much literature (Coelho, etc.) has the route starting at SJPP, or it...
You mean iPhone, right? I don't think iPods have SIM cards. If you do mean iPhone you need to have it unlocked prior to changing the SIM card. If you're an AT&T customer from US you can call 6-1-1 to get them to do that, if you qualify (you have to have owned your phone for 2 years). You can...
I just finished the Camino del Norte from Bilbao and was surprised at the amount of pavement. Yes, it's possible to follow the E9 for some stretches, but there are some very long days of pavement, mostly on small, rural roads, but in some cases by the sides of fairly busy roads. In general...
Thanks for putting this post together, Arn. It's great to read notes from people who'll be part of the Class of 2008. I'm arriving in SJPP on May 21 and am hoping to complete the Camino by June 30. Since I'll be "alone" I'm anxious to meet up with folks who are also making the walk. I'm from...
