    April 2022 Camino de Invierno

Thanks VN, I am following your past Invierno. Your pics are amazing - were they taken on smart phone? Janice

Pee Cloth - leave no trace

I thought I hit the jackpot when I learned how to squat and pee without taking off my backpack - now I have to jiggle too?!:p

    April 2022 Camino de Invierno

Thanks BP - yes I downloaded Peregrina2000 & friends guide, and I'm awaiting guidebook from forum shop. It is reassuring that the hills are not too bad, and I shall tell myself daily, that it is not the end of the world if something unforeseen were to happen. Janice

    April 2022 Camino de Invierno

Thanks for the tip - food, water, shelter. Seems like I will have pack lunch, snacks. And maybe not be able to eat two breakfasts' let alone one? Janice

Pee Cloth - leave no trace

The only "facilities" I saw on Camino Francis going over the top in the Pyrenees were the hunter's blinds. We are trekking through rural areas, drinking lots of water to stay hydrated, so yes there will be times where you have no choice. Janice

Pee Cloth - leave no trace

I agree the price is kind of high, but it is a high tech fabric impregnated with silver or something to keep odor and bacteria at bay. And it does seem to work better than the hanky I have used as it is not really absorbent and does retain odor unless you rinse it out after every use and hang...

Make My Mind Up 4 Me

My vote goes with the North Face jacket - it looks nice kinda like the Patagonia Down Sweater which I have and love. I did Camino Portuguese with a Icebreaker wool hoodie jacket and it was low profile and warm, but it stank to high heaven and I'm not certain why because I have wool undies and...

    April 2022 Camino de Invierno

I had the most satisfying moment yesterday when I clicked the buy button for my AIRLINE TICKET TO MADRID!!! Camino de Invierno here I come. I know you guys can relate to the excitement and anticipation of returning to the Camino and the journey that awaits. I was originally thinking of...

Pee Cloth - leave no trace

Hi to all. Perhaps some of you gals are familiar with "pee clothes" But for those who aren't familiar with them, they are a anti-microbial cloth used for wiping after you pee. Much better than a hanky, and weighs less than having to carry TP (and having to pack it out) or panty liners. Here...

Trekking poles: Folding vs. Telescoping - Which one is the better option?

Only ever used one brand of trekking poles and that's Black Diamond carbon z poles fold to ~ 12" weigh less than 16 ounces, and never had a problem at airports or when boarding airplane with my carry-on backpack.

    reflective vests

I don't know what is the legal way for a pedestrian to walk in Portugal, but for myself, I will crisscross the roads so as to NOT be in the blind spot of a auto driver - especially when there is no shoulder. I cut up my reflective vest and will apply to backpack cover and shoulder straps...

Last minute advice for first timers.

Go slow! It may take several days before you are in "Camino zone" and things happen as they should. Enjoy yourself along The Way with reminders of one day at a time, and the idea that "I walk toward Santiago" If you do not reach your destination, it will be there when you return. Buen...

    reflective vests

The reflective vest I have has not been used once on my first week of CP. It weighs ~ 120 gm - I may just ditch it or cut it up and apply strips of it to backpack. I think you may find to purchase in gas stations. Janice

Keen boots on CP? Need new shoes

Thanks guys, I will look in Golega. Looks like there is a Decathlon store in Santarem which I have already passed. Was sent by Santerem Hostel to shoe store, but no luck. Looks like Coimbra next stop for Decathlon store, Leira looks too far west. Janice

Getting together in Lisbon? Apr. 26-29

Many thanks Laurie for your help planning my first stage from Azambuja. All is well, although a am a bit of a slowpoke and it is way too warm - in the hi 80's (32 C) yesterday! It was delightful getting together with you in beautiful Lisboa - I will try my best to give updates, but so far I am...

Caminho em direcao Santiago de Compostela

In a few hours I will arrive in Lisbon :) This morning, I have tweaked my backpack numerous times, cleaned the house top to bottom, played with apps and settings on my mobile, (SOS Perigrino phone number on my home screen). I must say that my backpack looks rather stealth, and am happy with it...

    Equipment

I was looking online a bit ago at a gortex boot that "pumped" out the hot air as you took steps! Interesting concept and I could have used that technology in 2014 when I felt like drilling holes in by Salomon boots! It didn't help boots were 1/2 size too small. In two hours will depart for...

    Equipment

Great suggestions regarding foot wear IF you have "normal" feet. I have wide, short, high volume feet, with one foot 1/2 size bigger in size and volume. Lots of people wear trail runners, but I have never understood how these can bear the load of a 15lb+ pack. Janice
