Planning a Solo Walking Trip from Valenca to Santiago: Itinerary Questions and Tips

We walked from Porto to Santiago last May. Pontevedra is definitely bigger and more interesting than Caldas de Reis, although we did celebrate our 27th wedding anniversary in Caldas de Reis, and the Gin & Tonics are great in both (with Nordes gin). We also walked from Padron to Santiago in one...

Weird & wacky vending machine finds

There is a vending machine in Flanders, Belgium that sells loaves of bread. The title of the machine is "Pain Night & Day", a bizarre mix of French and English in an otherwise insistently Dutch/Flemish speaking area.

2018 Low light Photos from your Camino

First one with the sheep is leaving Fromista; the second with the moon is just past Moratinos

    Cleaning cruz de ferro

I wasn't intending to leave anything at the Cruz de Fierro when we walked in early June, as it never seemed particularly meaningful to me. The day before we left to walk Leon to Santiago, I realised that I had been involved in a campaign back home for several months which had ended the week...

Would you stop at places that lack the Camino hospitality?

I have experienced it in several places where they charged entry. Pamplona Cathedral had some exhibition and we were told to come back in the evening if we wanted to pray. Astorga Cathedral told us if we wanted to pray we could come back for 10am Mass the next morning. Burgos Cathedral did it...

    Walking from Virgen del Camino

We just walked from Leon to Santiago, and took the San Martin/road route. It was relatively tedious, broken by the superb church in la Virgen del Camino. The reason we did it was so that we would have a shorter day into Astorga the next day, which I think is about 30km if you go the scenic route...

I Walk; Spouse Drives - Doable?

We met an Austrian trio a few weeks ago just before Sarria. He was driving the car, and the two ladies were walking. They were mostly staying in private albergues or hotels, I think. If they didn't reach their goal for the day, he drove them back to where they stopped the next morning so they...

Little things that remind us of good times

You lost me on the 'luke-warm', one of the main reasons I'm not a fan of English ales.

    Albergues in Astorga

It seems from my research that there are two main albergues in Astorga, but neither of them can be booked. Is that correct? There is Albergue de peregrinos Siervas de María, which has 156 beds, with various size rooms, and there is Albergue San Javier, which has 110 beds, seemingly in bigger...

Booking Travel while on the Camino

We are on our fourth year this year; SJPdP to Pamplona, Pamplona to Burgos, Burgos to Leon, and in June we will finish Leon to Santiago. But Ireland is a lot easier to get back to Spain than North Dakota.

Booking Travel while on the Camino

If its not important top you to finish in Santiago and get a compostella (ie. walk the last 100kms), then just walk and see how far you get; 21 days could get you to Leon, depending on how far you walk each day and rest days etc.

    Spiritual Journey

Thank you for asking the question, and loving the responses. I have walked a number of times with my wife, and after a couple of days the first year, we realized that we were praying less than we normally would. We were getting up and out and walking, and then either talking to people or talking...
