Can anyone offer any information on the detour to Santo Domingo de Silos? Bus times, and where from etc... (from Burgos I imagine). Would one day be long enough for the detour, to hear the gregorian chants of the monks, spending one night in Santo Domingo?

I would love to glean any information on albergues along the Francés.. ones with special "encanto" for whatever reason. Kind hospitaleros, character, historic buildings, singing nuns etc... any interesting stories, recommendations? Camino days are just around the corner!! Thank you.. Bevbee..Xxx
Having just read a thread "Crossing the Pyrenees", I read a post by a member re- the wild ponies being bred for meat.. Are the Mérens horse (Pyrenean wild pony) not now a protected species??? Please someone tell me they are!!!
Starting my first Camino in Sept. and was planning on purchasing a staff in SJPdP as a walking aid (one hand free) and "souvenir"... having read so many comments on the successful use of trekking poles, also having a slightly dodgy knee, I´m having second thoughts about the staff... would poles...
I already have the credential, but do you have to "register" in the Pilgrim Office before starting? Will the first stamp be alright from the first albergue??

I´m having doubts whether to take a sleep mat or not.. doing the Camino Frances in Sept.. Taking a sleeping bag, not sure about the mat... has anyone any advice/found a sleep mat useful??
