    Walking and remembering

I’m back after the great 6-day famine walk from Strokestown in Roscommon along the Royal canal to the quays in Dublin. This is to commemorate the 1490 people (over 1000 children among them) who walked this way to the emigrant ships after being evicted in May 1847. http://nationalfamineway.ie/...

Launch of Irish Famine Way route

The details of the stages are posted on http://nationalfamineway.ie/the-national-famine-walk-2019/ The days seem to all finish at 5pm

Launch of Irish Famine Way route

It's on road and waymarked but, as I've not done it yet I can't say exactly where it is. My best guess is...

Launch of Irish Famine Way route

It's not a difficult route, on the canal towpath almost all the way. If you don't mind occasional rain Spring, Summer or Autumn should be fine. Winter is doable too if you are happy to deal with the short days. There are lots of hostels in Dublin. Everywhere else it's pubs or B&B.

Launch of Irish Famine Way route

The Irish Heritage Trust and Strokestown Park house are launching the National Famine Way walking trail with a six-day 167 km walk from Strokestown to Dublin from May 25th to May 30th 2019. The route follows the Royal canal from the Shannon river to Dublin. This is to remember the 1490 people...

Etapa 6-7: Ruta Hospitales v. Pola de Allande

I grew up building electricity networks in the west of Ireland (aha, happy years!). We spend our lives going in and out of fields full of cattle. The accumulated wisdom was: Dairy cows, who were handled twice a day, were totally unfazed by humans. Sometimes they would come over for a chat and...

    Climbing into Galicia

There must have been some serious engine power behind that stone boat too! An eight day passage from Palestine to Galicia takes some doing even now!

    Climbing into Galicia

Two old codgers from Ireland, Gerry and Felicity, were cycling, slowly, up the mountains into Galicia. We had started in Bayonne, had done the Nive to St-Jean, then the Camino Frances and were now ready to cross the last province boundary. The scent of the botafumeiro was getting stronger every...

    Ruta del Mar, in reverse!

Many thanks for this information, it's very helpful. We are 'of mature years' but are both experienced touring cyclists. I've cycled Frances and Finnistere before and Felicity has cycled from Ukraine in the past. The bikes are Koga randoneer touring bikes, the sort you meet coming off the...

    Ruta del Mar, in reverse!

Felicity and Gerry from Ireland are cycling the Frances and Finnistere in May/June. Rather then returning to Santiago de Compostello we plan on making our way from Muxia via La Coruna to Ferrol. From Ferrol we will follow the Camino del Mar in an easterly direction and pick up the Del Norte...

    Camino Finistere to Del Norte

Has anyone any comments on cycling from Muxia to the Camino del Norte? Felicity and Gerry from Ireland are cycling the Frances and Finnistere in May/June. Rather then returning to Santiago de Compostello we plan on making our way from Muxia via La Coruna and Ferrol and picking up the Del Norte...

    A Camino or Three!

Felicity and Gerry, from Ireland starting from SJPdeP on 20th May. We plan on cycling Camino Frances, Camino Finisterre and Camino del Norte (backwards!) in a month. I've done Frances and Finistere before but Felicity is a newcomer to the camino. Buen Camino everyone!

    Camino By Sea From Ireland

http://www.tg4.ie/ga/clair/camino-na-saile/ For eight hundred years Irish people have being going by boat to A Coruna in western Spain and walking the camino from there to Santiago de Compostello. Breanndán Ó Beaglaoich, Domhnall Mac Síthigh, Liam Holden & Breanndán Ó Muircheartaigh built a...

    Cycling the Norte

Nothing confirmed yet but the plans are to be in St-Jean on 19th May and to start on 20th. We need to be back in Bayonne on 17th June.

    Cycling the Norte

Cycling vs walking? I've not walked the camino but I cycled Frances and Finnistere in 2015. I did consider walking so you might be interested in my reasons for cycling. I live in the Irish midlands. An archaeological dig of a monastic graveyard in a nearby town, Mullingar turned up two...

    Cycling the Norte

Hi, I'm planning to cycle the el Norte in reverse this year. (That means cycling west to east, not cycling backwards!) The penciled in plans at the moment are: Cycle from home in Ireland to British midlands, Sheffield looks to be the easiest option Pick up European bike express to Bayonne...

    A Muslim walking the Camino?

Welcome, the Camino is wonderful and is for everyone without exception. This old unbeliever took special care to remember his beloved Muslim friends under Matamoros statues! https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/threads/ya-hajii-%D9%8A%D8%A7-%D8%AD%D8%A7%D8%AC.32418/#post-288004

O Cebreiro by bike, how tough is it....?

Hmmm..... It might be tricky to get to Roncesvales over the Via Napoleon that evening if you only arrive at SJPdeP at 3pm. I'm not saying it's impossible but everything will have to work perfectly, you will have to rush and you will likely miss the evening meal in Roncesvales. On the climb to...
