Le Puy Camino, GR-65
In April my friend, who was 70, and I (71 then) traveled to Lyon, France, then took a train to Le Puy en Velay. We hiked the GR65 from Le Puy to Moissac (250 miles, 400km) in 18 days ending on April 24th. That part of France is hilly, and our total elevation gain was 6100...
My pack was 7.5 kg, and I brought only a polyester fleece sleep sack, and a pillowcase to encase my very light down jacket to use as a pillow. I used an albergue blanket every night, and at the Samos Monastery on April 30, 2015, I needed and borrowed a second one off of an unoccupied bed. I’m...
For those who wash their clothes while in the shower, I don’t think it’s fair to use additional hot water, and shower time, that might be needed by others. That’s why hot water is not provided for clothes washing. Besides, modern laundry detergents work with cold water, a lot better than shampoo...
On April 6, 2018 my friend and I started in Le Puy en Velay and hiked to Moissac (250 miles, 400km) arriving on April 24th. We stayed in gîtes, except for one night at the St. Foy Monastery in Conques.
Except for nights in larger towns, we always stayed a gîte that offered demi-pension so we'd...
For body soap I take a small bar that fits inside a round, i.e. cylindrical, plastic pill container with the child-proof catch removed. With the wet bar standing upright, the soap doesn't stick to the round sides, and dries even with the cap on.

We always booked a gîte that offered demi-pension so we'd be sure to have a hot dinner meal...
I recommend Compeed-type blister cushions; you could buy them when you arrive in Spain.
Also, if your feet tend to be cold when you sleep, take a couple of very thin plastic bags, each large enough to fit over your foot. At bedtime put on a thin sock, then a plastic bag, then a heavy sock. This...
Hi! I walked from Le Puy to Moissac (400km) in 18 days ending on April 24, 2018. I agree generally with all of the previous comment, except the following:
1. There were no "tourism offices" to help with reservations.
2. In my experience not booking your gîte in advance is risky. We booked one...
Hi VWZoo! Here's what works for me. I order three pairs of hiking shoes on line, have them delivered, and then see how they feel at home at different times of the day, different socks, etc. This allows more time to evaluate them than in the stores. I keep the ones that feel the best, and return...
Hi! For U.S. Pilgrims I prefer to bring a Tri-plex 110 volt adapter, a.k.a. triple adapter plug, connected to my adapter plug that allows a U.S. 2-prong plug to fit the European outlet. Then, two other U.S. Pilgrims can plug their USB voltage converters, a.k.a. chargers, into my Tri-plex...
I passed through León on April 24, 2015 on my way to SdC. I did not book any albergues in advance, and never encountered one without a vacancy. I did reserve a bed in SdC before I departed from the U.S. If you're planning to spend the night in Portomarín, I recommend Albergue Novo Porto...
If you're looking for a cold place to sleep, don't miss the old schoolhouse, i.e. Municipal Albergue, at Villadangos del Páramo (21 km west of León). I almost froze there on April 24, 2015. Brrr!
Hi! I arrived in SdC on May 5, 2015. It was an amazing walk and I hope yours is the same. My pack was 7.5 kg, and I brought only a polyester fleece sleep sack, and a small polyester pillowcase to encase my very light down jacket to use as a pillow. I used an albergue blanket every night, and at...
Hi Gerhard! I was 69 when I arrived in SdC on May 5, 2015. It was an amazing walk and I hope yours is the same. My pack was 7.5 kg, and I brought only a polyester fleece sleep sack, and a pillowcase to encase my very light down jacket to use as a pillow. I used an albergue blanket every night...
Re. From Bayonne by Train: If you are taking the train from Bayonne to SJPdP, note that the train terminates at Campo-les-Bains where you will walk around the station to the back where a bus (le autobus, autocar, or car in French) will take you the rest of the way to the train station at SJPdP...
Hi Oztraveler! I walked from St. Jean to Burgos departing on 9/25/14 when I was 67. Then returned to walk from Burgos to SdC departing 4/17/15 when I was 68. My 10kg backpack was 13 percent of my weight. I did no extra training to supplement my normal every-other-day 2-mile run. I got lucky with...
For the second half of my Camino, I walked from Burgos on April 19, 2015, arriving in SdC on May 5. I had only a poly fleece sack (1.4 lbs.), and I used blankets at every albergue. My theory is that the blankets would be fairly clean in the spring since they had been cleaned over the winter...
I stayed at the Samos Monestario on April 30. 2015. The dormitory was less than half full. Yes, it was cold since the afternoon temperature was 13 C (56 F). But it wasn't as cold as camping. However, the bathroom had two large (looked like 100 gallons each) water heaters which relieved any worry...
Some do not require a chip. For example, in Burgos I had to try three ATM before I found one that worked with my US bank debit card without a chip. I don't know if the problem was due to a lack of chip or something else. It would be a good idea to stock up on cash in one of the larger cities. I...
