I walked my first Camino at age 70 (2nd at 71) and very strongly advise you not to use a travel company. I don't think their services are a good value for something that is easily done on your own, but value means different things to different people and we all have different budgets. More...
Hi James -- I walked the Francés 5 years ago for my 70th birthday and the next year I walked the Portugués from Porto to SdC. I think that the the Portugués was flatter but there were a lot of cobblestones that are hard on the feet, I thought it was less scenic, and some of the distances were...
Last fall I got that warning from t-mobile after only 6 weeks. I do travel a lot. SO I switched to Verizon for better local coverage and next long trip I will get a local SIM card (phone is unlocked.). I have heard that t-mobile is getting more aggressive with respect to "excessive roaming."
I'm a woman and I walked 2 Caminos in men's exofficio boxer briefs, wearing skirts. I recommend them -- very cool, very comfortable, and that's a great price. Off to Cosco!
Something that helps me — every time you take a rest break, but at least every 2 hours - sit down and take off your shoes and socks. Air your bare feet - wiggle your toes. If my feet err damp I would switch socks (always carried an extra pair.). Good luck, and start with shorter days while your...
A few times on the Camino people asked my age, mostly young people. I didn't mind telling them, I think they were impressed that the Camino is something old people can still do. I remember, many years ago, my husband and I hiking up Mount LeCompte in Great Smoky Mountains National Park --...
The skirt fabric rubs on the inside of my knee when walking — it’s a lot of fabric just around my knees. If you check out Purple Rain skirt it is very comfortable. Also, I think the full gathering and the knee length together are unflattering. The longer one looks fine.
I have the charcoal in the slim short length, which is l long on me (62" 157 cm). I like it and don't think it is too hot in the summer, it hides dirt and is neutral with any top. I also have the knee length in black but don't like it. The length is about mid knee on me and feels...
Hi -- I just started wearing Altra timps trail runners a month ago and they are the most comfortable trail runners I have ever worn. I have walked 2 caminos before, one in Saucony Peregrines and one in Altra Lone Peaks. I didn't have a problem, I find the Timps even more comfortable.
I sleep all night with audio books playing on my iPhone. I pick something boring that makes me sleep. And as davebugg suggests I charge my power bank at night.
I think anyone who wants to book ahead with a company should do so but don’t like the implication that people over 70 have more need for this service than others. I have walked 2 caminos at age 70 and 71 and had no difficulty making reservations when I needed to do so. I also enjoyed having...
There is no right answer for everyone, but to me as a woman over 70 traveling alone it makes sense to have a phone. I think as a matter of safety it is a good idea for solo women to have a phone.
I walked from Porto in trail runners last year - altra lone peak 3.0. No problems, no need for hiking boots. I also walked the Camino Frances 2 years ago in trail runners. Really this isn’t mountain climbing, just walking.
I have walked both the Camino Francés (2 years ago) and Camino Portugués (last september/october) and I am over 70. The CP also has a lot of people and would be fine for an older solo woman. I thought the CP was easier, but either way you would not be alone and I hope you go. I speak Spanish...
