water, water, water - your gonna love this stuff.
lightweight, breathable trailrunners, hiking poles.
those first days will test your mettle for endurance, either uphill or down.
take the days slow and steady until the heat changes your understanding of how to hike each day.
Buen Camino!
Check out the Black Rapid straps. I used one to sling my D500 daily, except in heavy rain. Unless you hand is on the camera, you may miss many useable shots.
Brooks Cascadia 13 and merino wool socks kept all blisters at bay and the sole plates kept my foot bed unbruised. Can't recommend this combo enough. >1000km including pre-camino walks.
Last September, on a 30+ day well into the Meseta, we came upon a lone shade tree that was casting enough shadow to harbor 12-14 pilgrims. Ten minutes rest and one group leaves as another take up residence.
I will never forget that live sombrero.
I found SdC, after walking from SJPdP, a bit of a letdown - not the denouemont anticipated.
That said, the most intriguing and satisfying part of my journey were the hot meseta days.
Place your focus on the steps along the way - not those at the cathedral entrance - and you will be rewarded in...
had no foot problems at all over 40 days using merino wool socks. Low odor, feel soft and supportive. Not cheap but inexpensive insurance - try a pair at home first.
It was an easy trip with that pack. Carried everything I needed for the next day and with plenty of room left for items collected along the way. Guessing my pack load was at 15-18lbs and I ended the trip weighing in at 199 - down from a 212lb start. Man, did I feel good!
Honestly, there were a...
Just finished SJPDP to Santiago with poles. There are a number of sections that you will very much appreciate the stability that poles will offer when in rough, downhill sections.
We were regularly passed by 20somethings literally bouncing down the trails - but IF you are not in that generation...
Jon, Joyce and Tom starting from SJPDP on Sept 9th while our Social Security checks get deposited directly, as we are officially geesers and celebrating retirement by the foot.
Tom, going to have most weight transported via daily luggage transfers. Body and one lens, weather dictated clothing onboard, with just water and snacks. 10-12lbs total. As the days go by the weight may vary but my body should adapt. I hear there are donkeys for hire along the way.....
Starting Sept 9th 2018 I am going to carry this from SJPDP to Santiago. Nikon D500 and a couple lenses, few accessories. Easy access to body and lenses, waterproof covers (when needed) and plenty of room for items required for the day (jacket, food, water, hat, extra socks, etc...
Been using Brooks Cascadia over the last month and will test them from SJPDD to Santiago on Sept 9th. Seem very well built and super breathable. Light weight and a rock plate were my targets in trail shoes. Also taking low cut Lowa for late October wet days.
