    Making the commitment

I did part of the CF several years ago. Had planned to do it all in 5 weeks starting from St Jean, then had to cut it short after 2 weeks. I was female senior solo traveller too. My experience was similar to yours. I have wonderful memories but no burning desire to go back. Yet every now and...

    Walking the Valcarlos route

I I stayed at Apartamentos de Montaña Mendiola which was very comfortable and spacious. On the walk from St Jean, I lost my new hi-tech walking stick purchased from boutique du pèlerin in St Jean. Left it one of the supermercados in Vendas, the large shopping mall en route. Was nearly at Val...

LIVE from the Camino Route Napoleon

Hi Plod, just to let you know, people are still going via Napoleon despite the warnings. Spoke to 2 guys today who stayed at Orisson on Tue and crossed yesterday. They said there were a couple of slippery bits covered in snow, otherwise ok. Strong, icy winds which I struck on the final stretch...

    Walking the Valcarlos route

I'd say definitely stop at Varcarlos. Was glad I did. I'm reasonably fit 66 and spent time elsewhere in Spain before starting, but found Valcarlos to Roncesvalles quite challenging enough by itself.

    Walking the Valcarlos route

I walked this route 2 days ago as the Napoleon was closed. Leaving St Jean, there's a short section (<1 kilometre) on D933, which is the main road going south. Around 10 on a Mon morning there was constant light traffic, but plenty of room on the verge and felt completely safe. After that, it...

LIVE from the Camino Route Napoleon

Just said the police had closed it due to snow and gave a stern talk about incurring rescue costs if you took the Napoleon and got into trouble. I'm in Valcarlos now. Weather in St Jean and here quite pleasant, mostly sunny, occasional strong winds, blowing against you of course.

From San Sebastian to St Jean Pied de Port

I'm in San Seb right now, leaving tomorrow on the Conda bus to St Jean via Pamplona. Bus leaves San Seb 12:30, arrives St Jean 16:15 with 55 mins between buses in Pamplona. NB, that is Sun timetable.

    WARNING. simcardspain.es

@Robo after reading your recommendation, I ordered one on 25 Feb. It came in about 2 weeks, just normal delivery.

    2 Last Minute Questions

The "i". Spanish is wonderfully regular with stress. The rules are: 1. Stress is on the penultimate syllable in words ending in a vowel*, 's' or 'n'. (Hence the 'i' in camino). 2. Otherwise stress is on the last syllable; e.g. verbs in the infinitive as they always end in 'r' 3. Any exception to...

My Mother is freaking out !

I'm with your mum. Stats be blowed. I'd be saying, not Paris! Can't you change the flight? My kids don't listen either.

Enjoying the debate, intrigued as to what else might have resembled fleece in the 16th century.

    2 Last Minute Questions

Like the bit about bar etiquette, horrified by standard 15% tips! I noticed in the US, everyone at least left the change even for a sandwich at a lunch counter. Is that done at fast food places?

    A confused newbie.......

Mea culpa: I tossed off a lighthearted comment about Spain, merinos and their wool which I am ashamed to say was quite inaccurate and not to be taken as fact. According to the only reliable statistics I could find on a superficial Google, all either undated or at least 5 years old, Australia...

    A confused newbie.......

It seems right and fitting to be wearing merino on the camino, seeing that the breed originated on the Iberian peninsula. Rascally antipodean sheep smugglers made away with innocent Spanish sheep. But at least now Spain is getting something back in the form of merino clad peregrinos.

    A confused newbie.......

I didn't know what a fleece was either. It sounds like a sheepskin jacket. When I asked for one at a sports/adventure shop, I was a bit taken aback at the reality. It was a budget shop though.

    Shoes, again!

Kanga, are you really a human or an angel from heaven? I just have to order within 34 hrs,13 mins and it will be delivered to my suburb by 24 Mar. Hope they're allowing for Easter, but don't leave till 31. Only 1 left in stock, gotta go.

    Shoes, again!

I love Asic Kayanos, they're so comfy. My big toe made itself a bit of extra room by pushing up a discreet bump in the upper. Never bothered me or my toe but invoked podiatrist veto. I've been put into NB too, for other issues. They're ok, but the Kayanos felt better. A lot of people have...
