traveling with a donkey in France

(was notified of this thread. In a rush - I apologize for a quick post from my phone) We walked 1500+ kms last summer with 2 donkeys (Salomé and Lolita), and our family of 4, including our 4 year old. Fantastic experience. 1. We rented from professional breeders. They select animals based on...

3G/4G availability on the voie de Tours?

On donkeys, guns, sailboats and true pilgrimages

You understand what I am (or was) trying to say. I was in Argentina a few months ago and surprised by the number of roadsigns saying that the Malvinas ARE Argentinians. So yes you are right when you write that intelligent dialog on that topic is next to impossible. I might have picked a less...

On donkeys, guns, sailboats and true pilgrimages

Tim Moore is a humorist. Humorists take liberties with facts. For instance, you'll read : You cannot train a donkay without pain! When he kick, you hit him with power in the stomach. [...] Always in the stomach. Their pain centre.’ I suppose that this falls in the funny category (as the...

On donkeys, guns, sailboats and true pilgrimages

Thanks for asking. Wrt segments, our family decided in favour of walking the Stevenson way instead of the CF. Somewhat turned off by stories about overcrowding on the CF, but mostly seduced by a poster. So we've walked from the Puy en Velay down to Lectoure, then to Auch, then the Arles way...

About a million questions on how to do and how to go about it!

Probably wise to wait until after you made up your mind about what will want to carry. Once you do, you will know how large the bag needs to be (most likely under 40L) and you'll be able to load and try various backpacks with your gear, to which you'll want to add one liter of water and maybe...

    How to pack a backpack?

Small stuff sacks (the size of a honeydew melon) make life easier. For example, one for underwear and base layer clothing, one for clothes, one for toiletries, one (dry bag) for electronics, one for food.

Michelin Guide for the Arles route?

You can see/download the route on the gr-infos.com site (Voie d'Arles is the GR 653). I found it useful to download the google earth files. I do not remember if the elevation profile is available directly or if you have to post process on a site like gpsvisualizer. Feel free to ask. (I also...

On donkeys, guns, sailboats and true pilgrimages

:) The best! Pedicure day today, with the blacksmith making home calls on campgrounds. Donkeys give all appearances of being happy. And humans definitely are. I'll start another thread in a short while.

    Water bladder troubles

I have the Osprey 2.5L. It's been used continuously since May 30th. The bladder itself is treated with a biocide and shows no sign of contamination. The tubing requires an occasional scrub with a rope and properly sized knot to remove what looks like algae growing on the walls.

Take extra care in the current heat

In Cleveland they'd say you're overdoing it :)

List of sleeping bags, liners, quilts and blankets under 1kg

Great work! (I suppose that "rating" is the lowest temperature in Celsius at which the bag / quilt keeps you reasonably warm?)

Buy Miam Miam guide in Arles?

Arles is a decent size agglomeration. You may want to purchase at FNAC, the leading French bookstore. You probably have plenty of time to buy online and retrieve the book at the local store.

    Altitude

1500 M max (less than 5000 feet). Below the usual threshold for altitude sickness. But high enough to experience terrible weather.

What's the Difference between a Pilgrimage and a Long Walk?

I guess I wish this were true. Unfortunately I can't help thinking about several people telling me about their experiences, many focusing on the fun they had visiting Spain with their friends, or on the headaches caused by too much wine. Hmmm... Reminds me of the Pittsburgh's children museum...

What's the Difference between a Pilgrimage and a Long Walk?

I was referring to the Kumbh Mela, in Allahabad India. If you read the wikipedia entry you will eventually come across a paragraph where it says that "Approximately 80 million people were estimated to attend on 14 February 2013." (but it may be a typo as elsewhere in the same entry we read 30...

On donkeys, guns, sailboats and true pilgrimages

:) We've had Lolita and Salomé walking with us for about a week now. Not clear to me if they like it, but has been great or us so far. Will post in a separate thread when I have the time.

What's the Difference between a Pilgrimage and a Long Walk?

I beg to disagree. Your opinions may very well shape my understanding of what is a pilgrimage, and yet this understanding is mine. In the fairly recent thread on the 100 vs 300k requirements, I (foolishly) wrote that I was rooting for 10k such that those who are fixated on the Compostela would...
