I was biking to work this morning when I passed a horse field and the pleasant smell of manure brought me right back to the Camino in my mind. Fresh manure is the primary smell I still associate with the Camino- do you have a smell that triggers your mind's return to the Camino?
I was flipping through Ivar and JohnnieWalker's photos of their recent stroll through SDC (see other thread) but was struck on the last photo of the alien space ship rising off the top of a nearby hill. Some internet sleuthing revealed it was not a spaceship but a new culture center/building...
I haven't seen this particular video posted on this board yet. Much of the footage is from a camera mounted on a mini-helicopter (the videographer calls it an oktocopter). I can't believe they were allowed to fly it inside. It's been highly edited and the music is a bit much, but I think it's...
On another thread, it was mentioned that the monastery at Santo Domingo de Silos only hosts men overnight. Is this true? And are there other refugios/albergues that bar a stay based on sex? Just curious. :?:
From Indiewire (online):
Finally, two of the most impressive and somewhat unexpected success stories of the fall continued well on their way:
Emilio Estevez's “The Way,” starring his father Martin Sheen, crossed the $3 million mark as it screened in 137 theaters this weekend via a unique...
Reading this forum, one would get the impression that the Camino can only be a positive, unique and life changing experience*- further, we do a lot of preaching to the choir around here about what a wonderful experience the Camino is :o.
Many of the newbie posts are some variation on the...
To alleviate overcrowding, Saudi Arabia built a new railway along the hajj pilgrimage route that carries 72,000 pilgrims per hour: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mD0KgHRf ... re=related
Maybe the Xunta would consider something similar for the Camino Frances?
For some reason the author of this article thought of the botafumeiro to illustrate folding mechanics:

Does anyone have any experience with children walking the Camino? I suppose the two main categories one would encounter would be school groups and kids walking with their parents. How old was the youngest peregrino that you've seen?
A friend of mine, who is into astronomy, sent me this picture today:
Of course, I sent him a reply telling him that the legend is that the Milky Way, which the Spaniards call El Camino de Santiago, was formed from the dust of the pilgrims headed to Santiago de Compostela for hundreds of...
Apparently the US is having a bedbug resurgence, too:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/mcclatchy/20090 ... /3234191_1
What I find interesting about the problem is that, according to the article, the mental health effects of bedbugs seem to dwarf the physical effects; I haven't encountered them so I...
On this morning's program "Morning Edition" (4/1/09) the US radio station NPR (National Public Radio) interviewed an 89 year old man who lives in Santiago De Compostela about the resurgence of interest in Spain in investigating "The Missing/Kidnapped Children of the Franco Regime." When Franco...
I was wondering if anyone had any stories about sports and/or games they came across on the Camino? (Either spectator or participatory.) I searched this website but except for a thread about bowling:
the-le-puy-route/topic5164.html?sd=d&hilit=sports#p31503
...I didn't find much.
I personally...
I was wondering if anyone could explain the difference between a refugio, an alburque and a hospital. In '88, I only heard the word refugio, but it seems that alburque is the accepted title lately. When I went to look up alburque in Google, it wanted to tell me all about Albuquerque,New Mexico...
Hello all,
My name is John and I walked from Pamplona to Santiago on the Camino Frances in the summer of 1988. It was one of the the best times of my life and I remember my journey quite fondly. I currently live in Telluride, Colorado.
