    Polarsteps

I haven't, but now I'm going to try it out. I used the TrailJournals website in 2016, but technology has apparently come a long way since then!

    WIFI

All you'll need is the handy question "¿Que es la contrasena para la WiFi?" to ask for the password (if it isn't on the wall) Lugged around a portable cell hotspot for 500 miles and never needed to use it once. 🤷‍♂️

    Overweight on the Frances?

Greg, Before I started prepping for the camino back in 2015, I was 285lbs (at 5'11") and working a desk job. I lost 25 pounds by the time I walked the Frances in September 2016, but 260 lbs is still a 'big guy'. I made it, and had a great time. You will, too. Some thoughs: - Plan time for...

    backpack_size

I walked the Frances with a 30L Gregory Z30 pack...though there was some extra room when I started, there were a number of times along the way when I needed that extra space for grocery items/leftovers. So a little extra space can be a good thing.

Necessary to book train tickets from Santiago to Madrid in mid-October?

+1 for book early. When I rode it in mid-October of 2016 it was pretty full. I booked online beforehand...it was one less thing to worry about at the end of a very long journey. Grace+Peace -Jason

Back Again - Caminho Português, September 2023

I caught the Camino bug again (not that I was ever really cured in the first place!). I'm planning to walk the Caminho Português from Lisboa to Santiago (and, hopefully, Finisterre this time) in September/October of 2023. It will be exactly seven years after completing the Camino Frances from...

    What A Walk!!

A friend I met along the Way (who was also from Pretoria, ironically) lost his jacket...because he left it on a park bench. It was the worst tragedy I witnessed in 33 days (he really liked that jacket ;)...we found a store and got him another one, though). I found a bed every night, the...

    The Ultimate Boots ...

I loved my newfangled fabric 'boots' (Keen Koven low top hiking shoes, actually). They were lightweight, had good ventilation and tread and lasted 800km without any issues...and with only a single blister in 33 days. That being said, use what works best for you (but you might want to give the...

Walking The Camino Without Training. Fool's Errand?

As a fellow 'big guy' who was in a similar situation, I have to echo the posts above. It can be done! I completed the Camino Frances in October after 33 days on the road (averaging about 15 mi/day, sometimes a lot more sometimes a lot less). I really wanted to prepare more before hand...but it...

    cutting down the packing list

The boots are always dirty. That's why they make you take them off in almost every albergue and store them. The brush is a couple of ounces you can safely dispense with!

Walking for you : YOUR intentions on my camino

Sarah, I think this is a beautiful offer and a unique way of remaining prayerful on your journey. May the Lord bless your efforts! Grace+Peace -Jason P.S. I am also leaving SJPP on 8 Sept. Hope to see you there!

Sep 3rd for 40 days or more

May you have a blessed trip! I will be a few days behind you (starting 9/8 from SJPP) but with schedule variations we may run into each other some time before Santiago. Grace+Peace -Jason

    What did you forget?

I have scanned copies of stuff on a thumb drive separate from the documents, but putting them on my Google Drive as well is a good idea.
  14. Deacon Jason

    What did you forget?

That is a good one to keep in mind, as I am used to everything being open on Sunday in California (though I certainly appreciate it being kept as a day of rest!)

    Correct Distance

Very true. Even high-grade commercial and military GPS requires accurate, fixed reference data to get to sub-meter accuracy on a measurement...and a few meters here or there per measurement adds up over the long haul. So, yeah, even with a good GPS device you end up just another person with a...

    What did you forget?

Thank you for the suggestion...on previous backpacking trips I've relied on zip lock bags for my documents to good effect. I'll probably do the same this time and hope it doesn't become a 'lesson learned'! Buen Camino -Jason

    What did you forget?

Upon reflection, my previous reply comes across a bit 'snippy' (what can I say, it's late )...but I have really tried to incorporate all of the great advice on the forum into my (very light) packing strategy...just wondering what I might have missed or forgotten from that collective wisdom.

    Starting September 6

Thom, Though I'll be a couple days behind you (I won't be leaving St. Jean until 8 Sept), we may cross paths somewhere along the way. Buen (very soon) Camino -Jason

    What did you forget?

I'm aware that Spain is a first world country with stores. I was primarily concerned to get feedback on things that people forgot to take or arrange that were a problem or annoyance later. By definition, things easily available at stores for reasonable prices don't really fit that bill. However...

First time walker- I start on September 13th!

Buen Camino, Angela. I start on the 8th, so I may see you somewhere along the way. Grace+Peace -Jason
