I walked from Coimbra to Mealhada this morning. Fortunately there was some rainfall (though also some lightning) in the late morning. Everything got good and damp, which should hinder further fires. I hope they got some rainfall to the southeast where the fires are, too.
I am in the area right now. The fire is east of the Camino but nevertheless a terrible tragedy. Further t-storms are forecast for late tomorrow afternoon and I intend to be in a town by then.
I had this experience over the past week when I walked a couple of days either side of Santarem. I didn't meet any pilgrims until I took a train ahead to Tomar, when I met two who said they had seen a few others. I've since gone back to Lisbon to weather a 40C heatwave.
