I think you probably are right. People who travel in a group have totally different expectations than individual walkers/pilgrims who are or feel more responsible for their journey. Pacerpoles on flights - can you take just the handles on board?
Reading the remarks in this thread I wonder if this is a question of finance or of possibilities. The problem arises I think only if you take your backpack with you in the plane.
