    want solitude

I have walked Camino Frances twice in October/November and once in March. So quiet, few people. But always nice people, good to experience the warmth between people. Nice brief meetings. Some really special. Mostly solitude. (Camino Portuguese in April, also few people.) I don't know what is...

    25 km per day?

I walk slower than home when walking 'the Camino', usually around 4km/h (compared to walking 5-6km/h at home when flat- I walk quite a lot usually). I have found that this, and some rest every two hours (and change of socks), is the best pace for me to avoid shin splints and other foot injuries...

In the fall of 2023, I walked from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela for about 30 hours.

Hi, I am impressed, and I guess and hope you felt good while walking. You seem to have walked a bit more than 4 km/h, right? (Sarria-Santiago) At that pace you can really take in the surroundings and I have found that pace to be the least associated with injuries on the Camino, although I prefer...

    What surprised you the most?

How much I miss it. Even getting soaked - and arrive at the albergue, put on dry clothes and feel like the luckiest person on earth. How wonderful and often heartwarming it is to hear buen Camino from locals, especially elder people - and other pilgrims.

    Shoes vs boots (again)

Take both! I will bring Altra Olympus 5 and boots on my next CF in 2 months time. I have done previously, too (Boots+Altra Olympus 4, magic soles). Perfect for me and my wide 'demanding' feet, and not really heavy... Good to switch. But I will walk in November...

Weirdest/Strangest item someone has taken on the Camino

I carried nearly a kilo of alpaca yarn (in various green shades) to knit a self designed sweater while walking as well as during stops and before/after meals... And I will bring the same amount again in November. I haven't decided on colour (many shades of one colour) yet - any suggestions?

Advice: Restart Camino from SJPP or from where I left off 5 years ago?

Oh, I am thinking about the same almost all the time. I had to return from Astorga early Nov 2021 due to serious illness in my family. If I get enough time off work I Will start from SJPP again early November. Trying to get enough time is difficult as I teach. If not possible, I Will continue...

Poll Do you listen to anything while walking?

For mye first Camino (Frances), I thought I needed to fill the time with preplanned sound like podcasts, audiobooks...... and to use music when I was bored, tired or whatever. To my surprise, I didn't "need" it at all. Time passed in a pleasant way, thinking about something, everything and...

What's the one thing in your pack, that you absolutely CANNOT do without...and why?

Lightweight Woolen rather large merino scarf 95x195cm - weighs almost nothing - the most versatile thing to bring on a winter-camino! You can obviously use it to warm your neck, but if you are soaking wet after having been exposed to slushy snow - you can keep warm if you tuck the scarf crossed...

@VNwalking - thank you for writing these words that will also lead me onward. I am also so glad I went home. No I am thinking about the last part of the camino with a smile.

Thank you @Stellamaris for the lovely and comforting words.

..., so now you have to walk for both of us.

Thank you @Mycroft. I also think November is a good Month - I went home from Astorga in the beginning of November 2021. I packed (and will pack for my next November camino) clothes and gear for all kinds of weather and I like the cold crispy mornings, expect some snow (that I am used to) and...

..., so now you have to walk for both of us.

I started Camino Frances after hard work for long time to be able to take time off to walk from St Jean to Finisterre/Muxia. The first time I walked Camino Frances was in 2015 - also in between jobs. This time I was looking forward to the wonderful mix of solitude, being outside all day, seeing...

Help - possibly need new shoes

Teva's are great! Altra Olympus (trail runners) have a fantastic sole and are superwide - I use one size larger than normal and thin woolen hiking socks. I also struggle to find bunion-friendly footwear and switch between these two - fantastic! I can recommend the pricey Darn tought socks -...

    The metal pedestrian bridge

So nice to be reminded about this bridge - I had completely forgotten about it! We were a few small groups who met while walking it - passing each other - again and again - on the bridge. We walked together after the bridge and had a wonderful dinner together in Astorga!

What is the nicest thing that anyone has said to you on the camino?

I walked smilingly through a tiny village somewhere in the Rioja province - a really old local man dressed in black approached me - I said good afternoon in Spanish - and he responded (in Spanish) without a smile: "I can see that you are not a catholic - yet you are doing a pilgrimage. Tell me -...
