Heading back out on the American Discovery Trail in late June

Thanks for this information. I have wondered about the trail and will read your posts about it. If you need a place to stay in Cedar Rapids, I may have a spot for you (if we're not gone hiking!)

I arrived in Santiago and didn't see a single pilgrim.

Glad you enjoyed it! There are so many good trails throughout Europe to explore

    Padron Peppers

I live in Iowa and have grown them for many years. I'm not sure if I bought the seeds in Spain or ordered them in the US. I start them from seeds 2 months ahead of planting them in May and I always end up with way more than I need. And as they say some are hot and some are not.

Recommendations for Wide and Light Hikers with Gortex layer for Trail Running

Topo shoes. I've worn many pairs of lone peaks on many Camino's and like Topo shoes even better

Recommendations for Wide and Light Hikers with Gortex layer for Trail Running

Topo is my latest wide gortex shoe to use. I liked this pair even more than rhe many Altras and Oboz I have hiked in. They are light, wide, and kept my feet dry. My wife latched on to the New Balance gortex Hierra (sp?) version 6 which has now been replaced by the v 7. They are also wide.

Absentee voting while on the Camino?

I signed up through fvap.gov and took the form to the county clerk and they will email a ballot. I live in Iowa and rules may vary state to state. I am in Italy now and anticipate I will receive a ballot

I may have one or possibly two. Minimally used. I will check with the better and more knowledgeable half later this AM.

Some basic questions about waking up etiquette

Excellent suggestions. It is amazing how loud zippers and plastic bags sound at 6 AM

    Toe Needs your help

I am always amazed at all the viable solutions our helpful members provide for our many pains and maladies, all of which exponentially increase as our birthdays accumulate. With this particular problem affecting our feet and toes, one thing must always be considered. And that is that as we age...

Checked the “toe issues” threads... this one is not addressed (so far)

Have someone accurately measure your feet. As they widen they also lengthen

    Shin Splints

That is excellent information and one must also consider their foot alignment and it’s contribution to the development of shin splints. Feet that have an excessive or prolonged pronation phase (flat feet) stress the tibialis anterior muscle. It’s attachment on the lower leg is frequently the...

    Clothes lines

We like to use something sold by “nite ize”. It has two cam jam attachment points and a thin cord that can be adjusted to any length. It tightens well and hold wet clothes. Easy to attach to trees, beds, hotel room balconies.

    Via Postumia

We are considering walking the Via Postumia this spring. The route information is fairly comprehensive but I have not been able to locate anyone who has recently walked it and would like some first hand pros and cons info regarding the trail. Any information or a point in the right direction...

    Matador Soap Bar Case

We have used the bag on the link below for our soap for many years. You can keep the soap in it while in the shower and the bag acts as a skin scrubber. You can hang it in those showers where there's no soap tray. It can be hung on a clothesline or bed frame to dry out. It's cheap, too. Hiker's...

New thievery model on the Camino....be aware!

Chaco sandals pros and cons? (plantar fasciitis dramas)

Chacos are great for my crappy feet but as you said too heavy. For two caminos I used oofos which are great but not real stable. This year I am wearing Chaco Odyssey which have great support for my feet but are MUCH LIGHTER than their sandals Worth a look. Also I could hike with them if I...
