    Lunch options after Orrison

Buy a sandwich (bocadillo) at Orisson. There is indeed nothing between there and Roncesvalles. Also suggest carrying extra snacks in your bag - nuts, fruit etc. It's a long, calorie-requiring day.

when you thought you had it all, you find....

I have carried and used the Euroshirm swing liteflex - very light at 207 gm. I found it very good for both hot sun and rain. I tuck it through my pack strap so I can be hands free.

What did you do/Where did you go after your Camino?

This lovely event reminds of a couple I met on my last Camino - in their 40s/50s, he from the Netherlands, she from the Czech Republic (their common language was English). They met and fell in love on the Frances and were now doing the VdeLP together. Maybe there is an advantage to walking a...

Where did you find the courage?

I too am of the mind set that if I don't head out by myself I simply won't get to do things I consider wonderful - like my caminos. My friends and colleagues all express amazement and admiration (and for some - horror) at my 'adventures' - but I am a bit bemused by their attitudes. What is life...

What did you do/Where did you go after your Camino?

Similar to Kiwi-family above, it's a long and expensive trip from NZ to Europe so I wanted to see places I hadn't previously visited...Camino no 1 I spent a week in London before and a week in Paris after. Loved both. On Camino no 2 I spent a week in Italy afterwards - Florence and Rome. Enjoyed...

The Camino Madrid in March 2018

I am reading this thread with much interest...I walked the Madrid last October as far as Villeguillo, then crossed to the Levante at Medina Del Campo before joining the VdelP at Zamora, and on to Santiago via the Sanabres. I met no other pilgrims until just before Zamora - a cohort would have...

Advice requested re walking the del Norte

I too am interested in this. I used maps.me on my camino last year (and found it very good) but did not know about including camino tracks...?

Could pilgrims have an hour in the cathedral to themselves?

Me too. A lovely church with a very peaceful feel.

Post Camino review of my packing list

I also really appreciate this review. I don't enjoy the heat either, and must admit I hadn't considered the benefits of a skirt - both for hot days and quick, convenient, toilet stops! The Primitivo looks lovely -and is now on my short list for next year, along with either the Salvador or the...

    August Camino

And another thought - despite the lack of peregrinos, the locals I encountered were unfailingly kind, generous and helpful. If I paused at an intersection for too long, someone would usually point the way or stop and query if I needed directions. If I was the only person in a restaurant/dining...

That is absolutely true! But my problem was usually managing to stay awake that late...

Stomach bug that won't go away, need help.

That is exactly where I also got a sudden and violent stomach upset on my camino in 2014. It 'passed' after a day and I was able to continue on, albeit slowly, after a day's rest. My strength returned in a few days, but funnily I went off both coffee and wine for the rest of the camino -...

    Where to lighten the load?

Hi there Kinnear! From memory, the heat was definitely more of an issue for me than the cold, particularly in the early stages. As you know, in our region it might warm up during the day but the heat drops away in the late afternoon. I found it different in Spain, the heat would build through...

    Heat warning

Yes indeed! Managing that inner dialog can be tricky. The inner compulsion to carry on, do more, get there, stick to the schedule, do what other peregrinos are doing...can be relentless. And having a time by which you need to arrive in SdeC (to catch flights out etc) can add to the self-imposed...

    Where to lighten the load?

Hi Mega, there's lots of really excellent advice provided here. I walked the CdeF at a similar time to you, late September to late October - and I found it HOT, simply because I am not used to walking in temperatures in high 20s (very seldom reaches that here in Wellington, NZ). I managed to...

    Heat warning

Excellent advice. Also consider taking an umbrella, one of the silvered ones, to provide even more shade than a hat.

    August Camino

Several other things to keep in mind that differ from the Frances - dinner timings really do stick to the traditional later hours ie 9 pm (no earlier dinner for peregrinos!); shops and bars do close on Sundays so you need to plan and stock up the day before, some villages have NO facilities eg...

2017 Hamilton NZ Camino meeting in July

Would love to join you but probably won't be in Hamilton that date. Will head to your facebook page to 'connect' however.

    August Camino

It is a very quiet camino indeed. Where I stayed in albergues, I was the only one. So no rush for beds! I either knocked on the door of the house where the key was held, when I entered the village (eg Ane) or rang when I arrived and met the hospitalero/a somewhere.

    Umbrella addict - advice needed!

As per the responses above, yes to opaque. The model I bought the Euroshirm Swing Liteflex (silvered) directly from Euroshirm's web site, it arrived quickly and safely. I suppose it was expensive at 40 euros plus international shipping, but no more so than any other high end umbrella or other...
