Senior Walking the Portuguese Coastal Route in the Rain: Advice Needed

I also did some rain walking on the Camino and had wet feet. I second all of the advice so far. Merino socks really help with less blistering and warmth. I used the lambswool for my feet, a pesky shoulder strap, and gave some to others for all kinds of padding...I DO recommend it!

Dealing with Vertigo: Seeking Solutions for Balance Issues

I also get vertigo and the things that help me are: taking an antihistamine IMMEDIATELY. Some people take Benadryl but that makes me too sleepy, so I take Zyrtec, Allegra or Claritin. I use two poles because I never know which way will be problematic on any given day. My issues are worse...

    Tampons

I found that generally in Europe, you find either plain old Tampax, or OB or similar WITHOUT applicators. So if those aren't your preference, you may want to bring some.

John Brierley is seriously ill - an invitation to send messages of thanks and support.

Message sent! John's book helped my marriage stay connected when my husband/son walked the CF and I could not! (We had two copies and I read each day about where they were, etc. This was prior to the proliferation of cellphones!)

    How to tell my parents?

Sometimes this type of difficulty can be cultural if your culture encourages young women to live at home till marriage, or to be family dependent. So that could be an issue in your case (you didn't say....). You've been considering this for a long time, and it sounds like you are financially...

Specific transit question about Madrid airport

Laurie, We flew from the US to Madrid in April 2022, connecting on Iberia to Bilboa. We did NOT check any luggage so cant comment on that. However, everyone arriving is channeled through passport check and AGAIN through security right away. We were then able to go into T4 and our Iberia...

Etiquette/ what to wear at churches

Scriptures of all "faiths" tell us that the Divine seeks US.....so if you feel called, go and be open to your feelings. Don't worry about the "stuff" of religion. You are welcome; no need to fear.

    Alternative POV

Have you considered that your fruitful pilgrimage might be an investment in your marriage? BTW, my spouse did it with our son and without me. A blessing for all of us❤️

    Flightbag

Just two weeks ago I purchased a really nice zip up duffle 40-60L for $15 Euro at a Decathlon in Barcelona for just this purpose....you might try there in Santiago. As these things go, I dont know whether that is inexpensive, but it is better than others I have bought, both in price and quality.

OBSOLETE COVID THREAD Testing before flight

I can't speak about Santiago, but I tested at the FLY COVID clinic at the Madrid airport for 30 euro just 5 days ago; results in about 10 minutes, so perhaps you could test there depending upon your flight time. If you just go to the Madrid airport site, and search for COVID testing, it will...

    Searching for "my" backpack

Oh - I carried about 12 lbs in the pack on camino.

    Searching for "my" backpack

I feel your pain! I carried the womens Osprey Kyte 46 liters, extra small torso length on my Camino. I'm 5'2", and at that time was about 118 pounds. It was a bit larger than needed liter-wise, but you just don't pack it completely full and use the compression straps. I would probably have...

    My shower "caddy"

The other cool thing about this would be that if you have any small items (this is more of a women's hint) such as bandana's, scarves, undies, etc., you could use the bag also to throw in a washer if you come across one, particularly if you are sharing a load with someone else.

Having spouse join for final 100km, or meet in Santiago - I’m thinking it’s not a great idea…

I respond from the place of 1)being the spouse who met my husband in Santiago after he'd walked the Camino Frances and I had spent 5 weeks alone at home. We were both different people at that point; you are totally correct that you'll need some processing time. However, we were both very...

Suggestions for Lightening my Backpack for a 6-day Camino Walk

Yes the Tevas are heavier, but at the end of a day of walking, I need something more supportive than a pair of flip flops or crocs; plus, if it's warm or I need to air out blisters, I can walk in Tevas for awhile.

..., so now you have to walk for both of us.

I am so sorry for the loss of your father - and the loss of your dream of the entire walk....at least for now. Grieving is a journey much like the Camino; the only way to heal is to walk the journey. It will take time, but it seems you have found the best plan for you to journey, and that is...

Compeed vs hikers wool or both?

The duct tape helps with that, or if you are female, you can tuck it under a bra strap under your shirt if the pressure point is in the right spot. I have sensitive ankle bones that stick out on the inside of my foot, and my higher topped OBOZ rubbed on those unless I had exactly the correct...

Compeed vs hikers wool or both?

I have never used Compeed, but the Hiker's Lambswool helped with shoe hotspots, places that rubbed from my pack straps, and I shared some with others as well. I liked it because you could use a lot, or a little, and mold it into the type of padding that you needed at the time. I definitely...

A Furnace Full of God: A Holy Year on the Camino de Santiago

Friends, I just finished Rebekah Scott's new book "A Furnace Full of God" (A Holy Year on the Camino). It's available from Amazon. Rebekah and Patrick purchased an old farm in Moratinos, and now welcome pilgrims into their home. I'm no writer, and whatever I say will not do the book justice...
