Laurie Lees 'As I walked out one midsummer morning' is one of my all time favourites. Then read the sequel 'a rose for winter'...a sense of Spain not so distant when I first visited Spain I the mid 70's. Nowadays tho Lees Spain is almost unrecognisable.
I doubt whether The walking route would be excatly the same for cyclists...some of it is on the beach, i did see bikes on the boardwalks but im not sure this was appropriate. Some of the woodland trails are difficult for bikes...i did see a couple carrying laden bikes slowly thru the difficult...
Ok this is tricky...the portuguese and spanish are friendly neighbours but that doesnt mean the portuguese like being seen as integral with spain. They are proud of their country, its soveriegnity and its language is totemic...Although there are some simililarities, portugese is in many ways...
I am interested in doing this route from la verna to rome next year ....i understand that it takes about 21 days...couple of questions
1. I will have about 18 days...what sections/stages would you say are worth leaving out if i have to?
2. Looks like i need to pilgrim passports...one to...
Apart from extra days in porto and santiago (at start and finish) i took rest days in baiona and Pontevedra. Pontevedra is a great place and if the weather is hot you can get the bus to sanxenxo on the coast. The pic is pf the igeja de virgin peregrina in pontevedra.
I walked it in june 2017 as the indicated temperatures were low to mid 20's. However it turned out to be a heatwave averaging around 30 plus degrees c each day. So as advised above make sure you have say a litre of water with you, start your walk as early in the day as possible. Wear a hat. Use...
That budget should be fine. I paid between 29 and 55 euros (tho Porto can be a bit more expensive depending on location and type of room). You shouldn't have a problem with accommodation but might be an issue if you halt in some of the smaller out of the way places. As you have time I would...
Goodness me you are really pushing yourself with some of the distances here. I found anything over 27kms a real slog. I did walk in June and it was very hot and I'm in my sixties so it may be more possible for you...but you might want to try it out at home before you go.
Apart from the salomon shoes, a modern walking pole and a proper hat I didn't get too technical about stuff and managed with a cheap rucksack....but I can with hindsight see the value of well balanced rucksacks. I had taken some lightweight ankle socks...I found later on that if I put on two...
After Pontevedra, taking the 'spiritual variant' instead of the route to Caldas comes highly recommended, but you would need to check whether you have the time to take it. I took walking/trekking shoes (Saloman) - and they were good given some of the rougher inland terrain - but I did get...
The route from Vigo to Redondela ...once you are out of town...takes you uphill and slightly inland but provides fantastic views of the bay ...then as you proceed you hit the 'senda de auga' (water path) which is in woodland and has some waterfalls, before you head down to redondela. The route...
Here is mine from the camino portugues coastal...
After Povoa I end up walking into trouble. Firstly, after a while and from time to time, the boardwalks just end, and with no clear path and with no arrows or way signs to help, I start to think I am getting a bit lost. This becomes a bit of a...
I have been to andulucia in september and the weather was warm with some hot days. I havent done the malaga path yet but i have seen features on the caminito del rey...u are literally walking along the edge of mountains and crossing gorges. Not for the faint hearted...but definately on my list!
Having gone off route out of Vigo i came across a memorial ...it moved me to post the following on my blog ...."...
We set off out of town alongside the port and without too much of a clue we accidentally find ourselves in alameda Monte da Guia, the hill side park that sits above the city and...
