I've walked the Camino in barefoot shoes

You mean the model of the shoes? I think those were Merrell's Vapor Glove or something like that 🙂

I've walked the Camino in barefoot shoes

FWIW, I walked Primitivo in barefoot shoes, no problems at all, love those, intend to use barefoot shoes in the future, both on and off Caminos…

    Celebrating my old age

I'll turn 70 in April next year. I have a plan to travel (from Helsinki) to Lübeck and start walking from there, via Eisenach and Beaune to Le Puy-en-Velay, and then Via Podiensis. Planned it for this year already, but had to get my left hip replaced:)

Spanish people like to connect with people that they talk to

Yup, I, being a Finn, was quite surprised in 2017 after having talked about my camino plans with a Spanish squash player living in Santiago, I was leaving the tournament (ETC 2017) banquet, he met me and didn't ask, but just hugged me… A quite warm memory for me 🥰

    Musical instruments on the Camino.

Well, I plan to make my next Camino with a cornett in three parts, not much weight, easily packed in a pouch. Can not stop playing for the length of my walk, lose my embouchure 🙂

    Finally a camino tattoo

I have one like this, made in Jerusalem, so a shell with Jerusalem cross…

    Camino Primitivo

FWIW, I walked Primitivo in 2018 with barefoot shoes. They worked quite well, no problems whatsoever, though steeper descents with loose stones had to be taken with appropriate respect. This might be relevant with all types of shoes, however.

Accommodations - Whether to book in advance on the Primitivo

I walked my Primitivo in Aug/Sep 2018, had no problems with accommodations. Just that in Castro I was the last one to get a bed, a fellow pilgrim arriving later slept in a tent outside, had some problems with dogs…

    How long after hip replacement?

Thanks for this topic, as it turned out that I need a hip replacement, too. Encouraging. Don't know the date yet, but anyway had to postpone the planned Lubeck-Santiago from this summer at least to the next 🙂

Is the Camino Primitivo more physically challenging than other routes?

I did Primitivo as my first Camino in 2018, and some of the fellow travellers asked me "Why did you choose this to be your first?" indicating the level of the challenge 🙂 Well, my decision was based on the fact that it was the first one walked in 9th century, and I as a simple person wanted to...

How many miles to put on your shoes before the Camino

Absolutely depends on the type of the shoes. I used barefoot shoes on my Primitivo, they are good almost straightaway.

    How cold in October?

For me too, as I have a plan to start next year in July from Lubeck, meaning it will be some time in October, perhaps late, when I arrive in Santiago. I also intend to have a sleeping bag with me 🙂

Camino Norte to Primitivo + General Questions

Hi, I did Primitivo first, as I am a simpleminded technical person (Primitivo is the first pilgrimage route 🙂). I walked it in 12 days, with barefoot shoes, so it is doable. But it would be good to do some exercise before starting, as others have suggested. I'll attach here a list of my stages...

Best footwear for Camino del Norte & Primitivo

FWIW I walked my Primitivo in barefoot shoes. Worked well for me. Might not work so well for someone with ankle problems.

The Red Bull race on the Primitivo

That might be the difference between lowest and highest point of the leg. I very much doubt that it's the total elevation gain, as e.g. from Grado to La Espina my equipment recorded 1000+ metres, and from Oviedo to Santiago ~7500 …

Primitivo - Any updates on the albergue situation?

I did my Primitivo in August-September (2018), then the only albergue I should have felt more comfortable having reserved was at Castro, as I got the last bed. Otherwise no problems, but of course no pandemic at the time…

One last accommodation spreadsheet for the road...

Thanks, that's an awesome work you've done! I might be there in two years time 🙂
  18. Jyrki Wahlstedt

    When was your first Camino?

One of the late walkers, with Primitivo in 2018 (I wrote about it: https://jyrkiwahlstedt.wordpress.com/2018/08/20/camino-0/, unfortunately text in Finnish, but there are pictures 🙂)

Poll Which Camino are you planning next?

I have a dream, of which I am not totally certain I can do it, to start walking from Lübeck in Germany. I hope…

El Primitivo te espera (the Primitivo is waiting for you)

Very emotional to see all those places, remembering all the people I met, ❤️
