As some others have proposed, I prefer to make it clear in my inquiry that I am a pilgrim, and gratefully accept any discount that might be offered. I would hate anyone to think I had an expectation that I am entitled to a discount because I am a pilgrim.

I don't stick to this rigidly, but my general rhythm is:
Walk two hours, have a brief stop (15 min or so) to have a snack, take off shoes and put back on;

I flew into Madrid, arriving around noon, then got an afternoon train to Sevilla. It worked a treat and for me was both convenient and economical (if you book the train well ahead).
