If you read up on the history of the camino, this is not new, or unheard of. In the past there were pilgrims on their own spiritual journey, forced pilgrims (an alternative punishment akin to imprisonment), and pilgrims who were walking in the name of someone else.
As my training progresses, and I'm starting to make all the choices about gear, I'm thinking more and more about getting a new pack. If I do, I will make sure I wear it in well before the trip. I have a few pre camino backpacking adventures planned.
Hi!
So my plan is to walk from Oloron to SJPP, and then walk the camino frances. I am a bit concerned that the CF will be crowded and hot. So, for both of those reasons I was thinking that the camino norte might be a nice change of pace.
Any thoughts on the weather comparing the two regions...
Thank you for these elevation maps! They really helped answer my question-if going from Oloron cut out some of the elevation (it doesn't, the big slope is 300 meters higher)
I think your idea of starting a few days before Saint Jean is a wise one.
How much is a SIM card? How much is it per month for data? Is it possible to buy a cheap smartphone at one of the orange stores? If so, how much do they run? Thanks!
You can go lighter, but the osprey is more than 5 times the price. I think I'm ok with a few extra ounces. Maybe I'll put the osprey one on a wish list.
It's a backpack. I didn't add a link at first because I didn't want it to seem like I was plugging a specific product, but it seems my post was unclear as it has been met with a lot of confusion.
Here's the link...
It does compress to a tiny ball! That's why I'm so excited about it!! It weighs about a half a pound. Much better than a purse, or typical daypack. May also be helpful for carrying groceries.
I will also use it to help organize my things inside my big bag.
No no no no, this isn't my real pack, this is just a day pack to carry essentials around town! I'm all for buying quality gear, but this piece doesn't have to be durable.
Hi!
I will be going on my first camino in mid/late June. I will be doing an early June training hike on the C&O canal. I'm thinking 50 miles in 3 days. Want to join? I will be backpacking, and bringing a tent a jetboil.
So I just found some 'ultralight' waterproof daypacks on ebay. There are a ton of choices. They are coming from china, but since they weigh less than a half of a pound, and I still have over a month before my trip, I think I'm good to go. Can't beat the price.
Sea to summit, and Osprey both...
OK! Thank you all for your responses, and your well thought out arguments and justifications.
As much as I would love to buy a new piece of gear; I've decided to stay with Ole' Faithful. I'm going to take her out on a 3 day, 45 mile backpacking trip to make sure my love for her has not waned...
A detail I failed to mention earlier:
I regularly go on 3 day backpacking trips and carry my tent and stove and food in this pack. I'm great at packing light!
