Walking the Camino Frances in 16 days?

If you only have 16 days I would advise you to start in Leon. Leon to Santiago can be done in 14-15 days, plus one security or rest day.

ONE thing I wish I had taken, ONE thing I wish I had NOT...

I agree re the light sleeping bag (up to 1 kg). Yopu MUST take a head net for the flies, Vaseline for the feet, and a poncho. Read my post "Did it" on 5 November after I finished the camino. Have fun! Philip

timeline limitation- where to fast forward?

Hi there, try and give yourself 5 weeks if possible. You should enjoy the Camino and not drive yourself to exhaustion day after day. When are you going? Remember 2010 is a Holy Year and July-August will be hell. I would recommend from mid-September to mid/late October. I did it in 32 days from...

    Walking in May 2010

Thanks Rebecca, I am glad you agree. The Coelho book was just horrible, patronizing and impossible to take seriously. Also, it was BADLY written, or was it the English translation? Shirley MacLaine's account is fascinating, despite the metaphysical passages. She remains one of my favorite...

    Did it!!!

Oh dear, this is too much. Retire and not post again? Surely you and I are responsible adults who can give and take some criticism like a man? Such exchanges add spice to the Forum as long as we don't stray off course. Dear Gareth, please stay on, and have a Merry Xmas. Philip

    Walking in May 2010

Sorry Susie, I suspect I wrongly addressed my book recommendations to Annie. No harm done, I suppose, as all information belongs to the Forum anyway. Both of you, Ultreya!!! Philip

    Walking in May 2010

Hello Annie, oh you are in for a treat. Good luck and have a great Camino. What have you read or are planning to read re preparation? Apart from the regular practical guidebooks (John Brierley, Rother Walking Guide, et al) may I recommend the following books so you can get a feel of the...

Hello all, It seems that a minor Forum "polemic" has been recently unleashed regarding my post. Being its original author, I feel that I must reply and set things straight. I want to thank all the contributing members for their insight. Ivar, many thanks for unlocking the post and also for...

Traveling the Camino de Santiago with a service dog

Please see my last post on the Camino Frances forum (November 5). I just finished the Camino. Having seen a few people travel with their dogs, my belief that you should NOT bring your dog on the Camino is now very reinforced. Spanish hotels, albergues, and restaurants are hostile to dogs...

    Did it!!!

Hello all, Philip in Athens here. I recently finished the Camino, starting from Roncesvalles on 20 September and arriving in Santiago on 21 October (32 days). I took 3 rest days (in Burgos, León, and Sarria) and had two "cheating" stages when I took the bus from Estella to Nàjera and the train...

    Some practical tips, please

Hello all, starting from Roncesvalles 20 September. I have been looking at the maps and trying to imagine what the day-by-day itineraries would be. I have just a couple of questions re steep stages and highways: How bad is the descent into Zubiri, is it very slippery and does it kill your...

Traveling the Camino de Santiago with a service dog

I don't think you should bring your dog on the Camino. Apart from the practical difficulties re being admitted to hostels and albergues, the simple fact is that your dog will be walking alongside you in a foreign terrain, entering the territories of the local country sheepdogs, village dogs...

Last 100 km for the "Compostela"? QUESTION TO IVAR, TOO

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but you need to do the last 100km on foot AT LEAST to be eligible for the "Compostela"? This means Sarria to Santiago (114 km), ie in 5-6 days? I am asking just in case one is delayed by fatigue or injury and makes up for the lost distance/days by taking a bus...

4 weeks to go, please advise?

Hello all, Yesterday (Sunday) during training I managed 21km in 4.5 hours on a hilly path terrain (not very steep), with a nearly full backpack (7.5kg, only toiletries, first aid/blister kit and essentials like passport, money etc missing). My thighs are a bit stiff today but no blisters or...

    Guidebook?

Hi all, This is Philip. In preparation for the Camino I have read the Rother Walking Guide by Cordula Rabe (2007 edition) and also John Brierley Pilgrim's Guide (2009 edition) for the practical details. Any opinions from some of you who have done it on which of the two is the more accurate...

Roncesvalles to Santiago starting 20 September

Hello all, this is Philip in Athens. Planning to do the Camino from Roncesvalles to Santiago, arriving Roncesvalles 19 September and starting out the next day. I speak Spanish and French. Have already done some trekking in Africa and New Zealand. I have of course read a lot about the Camino...
