I caught a very early flight from Stansted to Santiago (Thursday only) in time to catch one once a day direct bus to Sarria. Lunchtime arrival meant a reasonably leisurely walk that afternoon. You can go via Lugo and change buses there.
A 2nd pair of lightweight shoes - yes. The obvious answer re shorts or trousers is to take two pairs of trousers that unzip into 3/4 trousers or above the knee.
I've never had a blister. Have good socks as well as shoes. I walked Sarria to SdC with a staff (a 'pole' I unearthed just outside Sarria). I was walking c 17km a day. After one disaster I booked ahead for the next day.
Try booking Seminario Menor. I think they have a 24 desk. I stayed there last night. Private room €24. I was room.no. 378 (gives you an idea of its size). Also lots of dorm beds - single beds spaced apart. Only a few mins off the Camino/line 6 bus to/from the airport but a step to the bus/train...
Generally no need to prebook ( Sarria to SdC a possible exception). I'm at Melide now and after one day problem (one albergue closed, next two full) I 'm now booking the day before . Not booking does give you more flexibility but it it will be a worry for you - prebook.
PS walking solo is GREAT!
I restarted my Camino from Sarria yesterday. I havent booked anything yet. Walked in to Barbedelo last night (nice 8 bunk rooms with shower/ toilet. Today I walked 17km to Casa Banderas. I think if you stay off stage you'd be OK BUT I'm told some albergues are NOT accepting rucksacks if you...
The airport shuttle goes to the bus station. The bus to Pamplona leaves from the same place.
You may have to go upstairs to buy your ticket. Across the square there's a bar ...
With Ryanair I"ve found the cheapest way is to book your large rucksack with poles inside at the end of the booking process. I forgot to do this once but there was no charge then for poles at SdC. That's obviously changed.
It looks a very dreary industrialised route. I took a bus from the centre to Virgin de Camino - not expensive and only.took 20 miutes or so. From VdeC you have a choice of two routes. I took the more rural one ( still wasnt a very beautiful stretch.) Your reward is that Astorga awaits you...
I arrived c 11pm in April last year and decided to taxi to my hostal. No problems checking in - it is Spain after all - but I think an albergure would be a problem.
I bought one last year and it paid for itself immediately, struggled to use it in Sarria but the reolacement bus driver wasnt interested in seeing it or selling me a ticket! I'm told that if you book tickets well in advance then the ordinary discount is even better. Also thought I'd read...
