We flew Qatar from Melbourne last year.
We both took our packs as carry-on. Mine was a 36lt, my friends was much bigger than that, but it fit in the overhead. He wasn't even questioned about his pack, even on the much smaller plane for our final leg. The only issue we both had was our...
You will be ok! Once you're on the ground there it will be much easier than you think.
The Portuguese are lovely, generally helpful, and so many speak English ( but if you have a few words of Portuguese, they appreciate it).
Both my Camino's have been through Portugal, the first from Porto...
A Camino is definitely different. I do a lot of trail walking at home, and although I love it, it doesn't have the same feel.
I think that we all leave a little of our energy on the Camino, and we feel that combined energy when we walk. For those who are religious, you'd probably call it spirit...
I have walked both the Senda Litoral and the Central out of Porto. I was 60 when I walked the coastal, 64 when walking the central - which I did from Lisbon. I enjoyed both routes, although they are very different, & I found both routes easy to walk, but I am fairly fit.
If you walk the coastal...
I only wear silk these days, I find they are best for my feet. They are thin, dry very quickly, and being thin, I can double pair in extremely cold weather if I need to, without them making my shoes much tighter.
On our latest Camino, I wore my preferred ASICS road runners, while my friend chose trail runners.
Overall, they performed similarly for us - depending on the trail & the weather. On wet, muddy trails he had a slight advantage in the trail runners, but there was not enough of this type of...
I just walked the Portuguese Central from Lisbon in my ASICS Gel Kayano 29s. All up, they have done over 1200km (1000 of those on the Camino & associated travel).
I'm still wearing them for road running & they are holding up well. I've swapped out the standard insole for a more cushioned one.
You could be right in that thinking.
In my mid 60's I still do multi day wilderness walks, so used to a pack around the 20kg mark.
My pack for this year's Camino was only 5.8 kg, so it felt like a joy to carry it!
I can't see myself using a transfer service, but we never know what the future...
I only seem to get jet lag when flying East, so it's not an issue for me to walk straight away. Coming home is awful, takes over a week to fully recover.
I always try to sleep most of my flight, & drink lots of water (although that didn't work going to Canada last year, which sort of reinforced...
I use Cashpassport by MasterCard. It's a debit card that allows you to convert your money saved on the card to the currency of the country you'll be traveling in. On my last Camino, this was my primary card. I used it for most shop purchases, and withdrew €200-300 as I needed. This avoided...
I had a Mi band 5 which was great for my Camino in 2019. I've now upgraded to Mi 7, as I need to be able to track my blood oxygen levels. But for training, I use the Sportractive app. It gives me a much better range of information & history so I can track improvement.
The challenge is in recognising your thinking, and accepting that only you have the ability to change those thoughts. So many stumble through their lives without seeing.
Hi Chris,
My friend and I walked the Senda Litoral and coastal routes in April this year. We started at the cathedral, walked down to the river and out to the coast along the riverfront. It was an awesome way to start our walk - I can't recommend it highly enough!
Depending on your level of...
I also walked the Senda Litoral this year, and absolutely loved the tranquillity of my 'walking meditation'. I was lucky to have brief conversations with other pilgrims, but didn't share meals with any.
However, I walked just prior to Easter, and on reaching the 100km point suddenly had to cope...
A lot depends on how fit you are before you begin, and how often during the day you have breaks.
I did quite a bit of training with my loaded pack before I left, and then had a week of sightseeing when I walked pretty much everywhere before beginning my Camino from Porto.
I had no issues with...
@EdelK, I walked the Senda Litoral in April this year. There was no time when I felt uncomfortable walking alone, and I found both the experience and the scenery wonderful.
And the walk out of Porto along the riverfront at pre dawn was glorious.
My number 1 would be to Please not drop your rubbish, and #2, if you come across rubbish - please pick it up. Walking the Portuguese in April I came across rubbish that could only have been left by pilgrims due to where it was. It's part of respect for the earth we inhabit, the country we are...
I have Elle's guidebook, I find it really clear and easy to follow. :) I like that it's digital, so no extra weight and no network connection needed.
In contrast Brierley's guide seems a little confusing, although the maps are very good.
