With the weather one never knows. I planned my travel on April 13, 2018 and the Napoleon route was closed so I went via Valcarlos. I heard it opened up again a few days later. I think April 1 is pushing it for Napoleon route but if mother nature cooperates you should be fine. FYI I found...
I live in Florida so apart from long walks in advance (also gave me a chance to ensure my shoes and socks were broken in and blister preventing), I didn't have any hills to climb and found the ascent throughout the Camino to be hard. I also wore my backpack daily for the last two weeks before...
Not sure I can add much else but here is my experience: I travelled mid April through end of May 2018. The Napoleon route from St Jean Pied de Port was closed that week over the Pyrenees and I had only three days of rain during my entire Camino Frances. Leaving O Cebreiro there was even a...
I agree with the other posts in reply to your message. I did my camino (full frances route from SJPP to Santiago) a couple of years ago when I was 60. I live in Miami and found the training to be hard due to the humidity and lack of topography. Our local camino group suggested I go up and...
I enjoyed both videos. Kind of disappointed the Iron Cross/Cruz de Ferro was not covered but I guess one cannot show every highlight. As with others I found the voice a bit off putting but a small “nit” considering the wonderful photography, insightful interviews and unforgettable memories it...
I also suggest since you will have the time to take a 2 km detour each way and visit the Vilar de Donas church en route about 7 kms before Palas de Rei. The altar frescoes should be completely restored by now and it is well worth the side trip. You will see the sign.
I walked my first camino last year starting in SJPP on April 13, ending in Santiago May 18th. The first night was the best moment. The Napoleon route was closed so I went the Valcarlos route from SJPP to Roncesvalles through pouring rain. As veterans know this day is fairly trying and the...
I started this year on April 13th from SJPP. Lots of mud and rivers were high so be prepared. This was an abnormally wet spring from what I understand but people one to two weeks before me couldn't take certain routes due to flooding. Was advised by pilgrim's office NOT to take Napoleon...
I've heard very good things about Express Bourricot and if you are sharing with other pilgrims, the cost from the Biarritz airport goes down to 19 Euros per person if the van is full.
I'm told the trains have been suspended while there are track repairs going on. They are supposed to be running buses to SJPP but have heard some people have had to arrange their own transportation. You might want to have alternate plans.
I agree and I guess would add the word "supposed" to your post. I've seen posts by pilgrims on Facebook this past week where no bus was available and they ended up going by Express Bourricot which apparently is cheaper to arrange from the airport.
Do you have anything in particular you need to do in Bayonne? I'm asking as I've heard the trains from Bayonne to St Jean Pied de Port have been suspended until further notice due to landslide/maintenance issues on the line so you might be better getting a shared ride from the airport.
Hi there! Does anyone know if it will be reopened, subject to weather today/tomorrow? The original official closing period ends today, March 31. Cannot find any news on it anywhere. I know it may still face the occasional weather closure and the SJPP pilgrim's office will let me know but...
