Thinking of doing this from South to North , is this a reverse route ? The signage on some of the others ( Norte and Plata ) would be problematic if doing it against the flow. It just would work better for me in terms of transport to the start and finish. Thanks.
Indeed my thoughts exactly. I have seen that on other Caminos where you end up almost back where you started for no good reason. Avoiding major roads is a good reason to increase the distance but sometimes the diversions just seem pointless. I do not like 40km days :-)
Thanks for all the information provided. I think the Chartres route is the one to take. I have looked at a stage list for the GR655 from Paris. When I input the stage ends /way points and just use Google Maps to calculate the direct distance I get quite a difference in the total length...
Looking at the GR655 map I see it splits after Paris and joins together at Tours. Has anyone done both the Chartres and Orleans variation and recommends one or the other ? More pleasant walking / scenery is my preference. Or if you have done either and loved it, that is good too.
Emmm, thanks for the information. I guess I could take side trips from the VDLP to Medina del Campo by public transport. I have been to Toledo, Avila and Segovia on previous holidays. However the spring description of the Levante sounds attractive. Mentally I have probably decided on the...
Hi, I was wondering if anyone has done both the Levante and Seville-Zamora section of the Plata routes ?
Apart from the distances what are the major differences in terrain, availability of Alberges, annoyances , road vs path walking etc. between these ? While all routes are different ( I...
Thanks for the information. At this point it seems my friend will join later so I will probably miss Holy Week entirely ( which has pros and cons ). That shuttle idea is a good one,
Thanks for the suggestions. As I will need to meet a friend in A Guidina on Apr 27th I have just worked back to start in Seville about 30 days before that. I guess I will be around Salamanca around Easter so.
I am planning to start the Via de la Plata in April. Easter in 2020 is April 12th. I believe there can be accommodation issues in Spain around that time. Would it be better to postpone my start in Seville until after Easter ? Is it the week before or after Easter that is particularly busy ...
There is a very nice albergue in Piñera. Not to be overlooked. Very useful information provided for the various options to Ribadeo and on to Mondonedo. Also the pilgrims meal is certainly worth it. Maybe too short a stage from Luarca.
Potential issues in Hendaye - Irun due to G7 in Biarritz and Alt-G7 in Handaye https://www.france24.com/en/20190820-biarritz-g7-lockdown-residents-business-owners-uneasy-counter-summit Some transport links suspended etc.
I will arrive early evening in Biarritz on Tue 27th Aug. Given that the private hostel in Irun has closed now, what is the likelhood of getting a bed in the pilgrims hostel at 8pm in the evening. I do not really see any hostels between Bayonne, Biarritz, Saint Jean de Luz or Hendaye, Irun...
Thanks. I am meeting a friend in Mondonedo so I will factor in a few rest days even if I dont need them to synch our arrival times there. I think Gijon and one or two of those places will do just fine.
Looking at the various stagings for the Norte they seem to vary between 31 and 36 stages. I would like to add a couple of rest days ( maybe three ). Excluding Bilbao, are there any recommended places for taking a rest day along the route ?
Ahh, the Feve from Asturias is a good idea too. My friends plans come from the other direction though, Madrid to Lugo by train and then on. Starting the Primitivo last year we used that airport.
I will do the Norte from Irun in the Autumn. A friend wishes to join me for the last part and given their time Lourenzá would appear to be the best meet up spot. Public transport to the smaller towns and villages seems a little scant. Could someone suggest the best way to get there form...
