Advice needed on travel from Tomar to Porto

Jungleboy is right. I just checked the CP app and found that Tomar to Porto generally takes about 4 hours and involves two changes of train, at Lamarosa and Coimbra. If you can find a direct bus, that's the preferred option I would think.

Ideas on ways to extend the Coastal Camino portuguese

One option you might wish to consider is, when you reach Caminha on the Minho River, swing east and do the riverside ecopista walk to Valença, which has a scenic 17th century fortress. From there, you can also walk across the river and explore the Spanish town of Tui, which has an interesting...

Which route between Caminha and Tui?

Thank you senora1, and Buen Camino!

Which route between Caminha and Tui?

Here's a blog post my wife and I did on the ecopista. It's scenic, but as MilenaS says, no place to stop along the way: https://twoclinestraveling.wordpress.com/2019/06/18/along-the-rio-minho/

What is your favourite? Suggest a route - coastal or coastal mixed with central. 7 days in April/may

Given your time constraints, just walking the coastal north from Porto might be the simplest approach. However far you get, it's easy to take the train, bus or metro back to Porto.* Also, you say you love the idea of walking along the Atlantic coast and the Portuguese coastal is ideal for that...

    Staying in Padron

Padrón does have some associations with the St. James story that are worth a look: the Iria Flavia church, the pedron stone housed in the main church, and shrine on the hill. Here's our blog with photos...

    Language for camino portuguese?

This is correct. People here watch movies with Portuguese subtitles and are exposed relentlessly to the sound of English. Walk through a mall here and notice all the signs and piped-in music in English. You pass young people in the streets and they make jokes in English to amuse their friends...

    Language for camino portuguese?

This is all anecdotal, but I've heard from other ex-pats here that Portuguese people often get downright offended if you try your Spanish on them (the two countries have a complicated history). You're better off using a few words and phrases in Portuguese to break the ice, as lovelyshell...

Starting in A Guarda but how to get there?

I would agree with Doug that Porto to A Guarda is your best bet. I don't have any experience with the Campanha station in Porto but have taken the train from São Bento station (that's the one with the gorgeous blue tilework) to Caminha and understand that you can reach São Bento from Campanha in...

    Coastal in October

You might be okay in your time time frame but be aware the weather will get cooler and rainier as you get into October: https://www.climatestotravel.com/climate/spain/santiago-de-compostela People typically start from Porto in Portugal, which has a good airport and also good train connections to...

    Portuguese Central or Coastal

This is a complicated question and you're going to get a lot of opinions on each side. Having walked the coastal twice and part of the Central once (Porto to Ponte de Lima), I can offer a few general comments: 1) From a pure walking point of view, the coastal is much easier, hands down. On the...

"Ideal" itinerary for a leisurely Camino Portuguese?

We stayed in O Milladoiro in 2018 and I agree it's a perfect spot from which to reach Santiago the next morning, which is only about 9.5 km away. You have plenty of time to go to the Pilgrim's Office to get your compostela and perhaps attend a pilgrim's mass in the cathedral.

"Ideal" itinerary for a leisurely Camino Portuguese?

Looking at your planned itinerary, I would suggest considering Pontevedra and Ponte de Lima for rest days. Both of them have interesting historic sites to visit and good restaurants. Ponte de Lima is my personal favourite. Here's a blog post if you have any interest...

Baggage Transfer from Porto to Santiago (no stops in between)

I did the same as dougfitz, used the CTT. Worked fine, no issues, and had the pleasure of meeting Ivar himself when we retrieved the boxes.

We've used both Tuitrans and Top Santiago (on different trips) and found both to be satisfactory.

Where to start my Coastal Camino?

I agree with ElCee that Oia in Spain would make a good stopping point. And for a beginning point, you might consider Viana do Costello on the Portuguese side. One advantage of Viana is that you can take the train directly there from Porto. And the segment between there and Oia includes some of...

Armenteira Monastery no longer takes reservations for pilgrims

We stayed there for two nights in June 2022 and definitely noticed tension between the nuns and pilgrims. The main issue is noise. The nuns follow vows of silence and reflection but some pilgrims, particularly those arriving in groups, tend to treat the place like a hotel, which ruins the...

Buen Camino app, negative about central Portugal

I agree absolutely with what Dick & Kitty say about the N306. No fun at all, as you can see from our blog post: https://twoclinestraveling.wordpress.com/2023/09/02/porto-to-casa-mindela-6-6-km-too-much-traffic/

    Boat Crossing Assistance Needed

Do you have your lodging in Vilanova booked for Oct. 2? If so, ask them if they can get you on a boat the next morning. They should know the companies involved and how the system works.
