What do you wash your clothes with

    Aleppo soap for every need.

Are you 70+ and still walking Caminos?

Great pick, Chrissy! At 73. I was inspired by a fellow on this forum named Jose, who had finished the CF at 75. I did my first at 73, my second at 76 and I'll do the Portugese +Muxia to cerebrate my 80th. I now have friends all over the world from my Caminos. They are all warm, gracious and...

Transport back from Orisson if full booked

Alan-try emailing Orisson. I did a few years ago (persistently) and they finally answered me with a yes. Very nice people...and explain your son-in-law has a reservation.

What exercises to do to strengthen lower back?

I agree with the others...see a physical therapist for specific exercises. Short of that swim doing side stroke or a modified backstroke (both arms at once vs alternating arms), if you have a place to do so. Great for the back, easy on the spine and builds cardiovascular fitness.

    Alternative to Allianz travel insurance

I'm 79 as well and at this age, I'd not travel without insurance. Small things can suddenly turn into big things. Certainly, get medical with a good evacuation coverage. A friend got very ill in Italy and it cost her over $40,000 to be medivaced back to the US! I've used it only twice in all my...

First Camino - Nervous and with questions about the start

Hello, Henrik. You have chose a wonderful path! Please be assured, we have all had pre-Camino jitters...so many unknowns..until you start out. Then, you will be happily amazed at how simple life can be and with the gradual bonds you'll form with others along the route. It is an amazing...

    Paving, dirt, gravel, or...?

That was a broken-in, but new pair of the same Gobis. Didn't want to switch shoe type in the middle; just switch due to wear & tear, as you can see! P.S. I took my beloved Para poles in a small suitcase, which I sent through baggage with other non-carryon items. Sent that to Ivar from Madrid and...

    Paving, dirt, gravel, or...?

Most trail runners do well on all surfaces. I used New Balance Gobis, which were great. Remember to size up one notch. Your feet will thank you down the trail! This was in Leon, where I switched shoes (from my care package mailed from Madrid 😊) Walking poles...YES!! Buen Camino

    Footwear advice for May

Trail runners are fine! That's what I wore. But, make sure they're broken in. If you're doing the full CF, consider having a second pair somewhere around Leon. I had made a reservation there ahead of the start and sent myself a "care package" to that place from the Madrid Aorport. 250 miles and...

Where does the bus stop in Samos, to Sarria?

You've chosen a great section! Buen camino! You'll be back to do the rest.🙏

Where does the bus stop in Samos, to Sarria?

Here's some advice Re:Samos: take your time. From Tricastela to Samos is one of the most beautiful trails on the CF. The one from Samos to Sarria is almost as beautiful and so varied it's amazing. Don't bus from Samos to Sarria! You'll miss the forest trails, gorgeous little farms and lovely...

Stay in SJPP overnight or start for Orisson

I agree with others. Book Orrison in way advance. Stay in SJPDP and enjoy the hike up (as in REALLY UP) to Orrison and relax on their balcony overlooking the “mountains “. Or…keep on from SJPDP over the Pyrenees to Roncesvalles. Beautiful route!

Stay in SJPP overnight or start for Orisson

Yes!!!! Book Ortison asap. They fill very quickly!

Best way to SJPDP from USA

I stayed near the bus station in Pamplona, took the morning bus to SJPdP and made Orrison by mid afternoon.

    Accommodation for Madrid airport

I stayed at the Airport Hilton and was very pleased with the service. I intended on one night, but tested positive for Covid and had to wait 5 days! They took excellent care of me (even cheered when I tested negative and rushed me to the airport to get official clearance!) Their breakfast buffet...

Hiking stick instead of walking poles

I LOVE my poles. I thought I was well trained for a "flat lander" on my first Camino. I started out of SJPDP on a sunny day and less than a mile later hauled out my poles and leaned on them all the way up to Orrison! I would have been on my knees without them! The only place I didn't use them...

From my doorstep in Germany - a (very!) long term project

Keep on writing! This is a fun read! Guter Weg! (I think that's Buen Camino)...🫣

Say No! to rubber tips on your poles.

Tongue-in-cheek or not, this has been a fun and interesting post. I especially like the "switch blade" poles! I haven't laughed this much with a post for some time. Good to have you back, Dave!

    Sending a non-backpack with Correos?

I've used Correos to ship forward. I send a 2nd pair of shoes and socks to a prearranged hotel in Leon from Madrid, when I did the CF from SJPdP. It worked great. I also sent my little travel case to Ivars storage place from a Madrid...it was there when I finished a month later. Correos is...
