Hips and glutes tight post-Camino? A runner's problem...

Tough one! Not so much a fan of stretching and foam rolling, but if you think those help don't stop. Don't know how long you were on the CF for, but maybe it's that you became significantly detrained and tried to start back up your old routine, which was too much too fast? Also did your body...

Botafumeiro swings with a new scent

Sadly the source here seems to be a legit newspaper in the Dominican Republic. Yet in the body of their story they cite the Spanish source "Hay Noticia" which states at its website it's a humor website for entertainment. Sad! When I saw the botafumeiro in action this summer, I was surprised...

    Madrid!

As the wonderful (and wonderfully convincing) song Vente Pa' Madrid by Ketama argues, all the best things are in Madrid. I second all the museum recommendations. In the Prado I'd spend a bunch of time in front of Velazquez's Las Meninas and Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights...

    Camino Souveniers for Foodies

Saffron inexpensive? By weight it's pricier than gold! :p More seriously, lots of stuff that isn't the real deal gets sold cheaply as saffron. The individual threads (stamens) need to be harvested by hand from the delicate and hard to grow flower, so the real stuff is not inexpensive at all.

    Pilgrim mass script

Yeah, there's a particular "script," called the Roman Missal. There are various editions and translations, which often vary by country. I tried looking for one on an official Catholic Spanish website, but struck out. However, did come across this website, which should be helpful to you...

    Protein bars yes or no?

It's all about the *quantity* of protein you need and you consume. I'm no nutritionist, but I'd say given the increased amount of exercise you'll be doing on the camino (coupled with the fact that many people lose weight on the camino, indicating they're in a caloric deficit) it's a good idea to...

    Santiago Tart

Made this after visiting Santiago this summer. Unfortunately I can't recall offhand which recipe I used, but it came out really well. Although I couldn't find my mom's electric mixer so I had to hand-beat the egg whites to a stiff peak. Wow that took forever! Cutting out the cross on regular...

    Protein bars yes or no?

The US recommended daily allowance for protein is 0.8 grams per day per kg of bodyweight. I think that's on the (very) low side however. Doing something aerobic and catabolic like long distance walks I'd definitely want to consume more protein than that so my body could rebuild any lean muscle...

    Opinions back home

No clue if you are from the USA, but if you are comparative crime statistics might do the trick. For instance, the homicide rate in the US is 8.5x worse than in Spain. I'd imagine you could find similar stats for most violent crimes. After a reasonable amount of reassurance, tell them that you...

An excellent reason to detour in Logroño

When I do the CF I definitely want to take some time off walking and get myself to Haro from Logroño to tour López de Heredia and Cvne, two of the most traditional, and imo best, producers in Rioja. The López whites are to die for.

Portico de la Gloria - Galician parliament demands free access days

If you think this might not be fair definitely don't read up on the Spanish state's confiscation of Catholic property and assets throughout history! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_confiscation

    Paella

Right. Who said it was? The bright yellow color to frozen, pre-made paella comes from food coloring, not saffron. There are a bunch of things, not just the use of saffron, that distinguish paella from arroz con pollo. Two distinct dishes.

    Paella

Authentic paella is brown, not bright yellow. The latter is food coloring. And it's all about the rice, both texture and taste, sadly something you don't get at all in one of those frozen, pre-made versions. Love these two related websites: http://en.wikipaella.org/...
