I hiked the Camino Frances from SJPP to Finisterre/Muxia this summer without carrying a cell phone at all. I felt fine and have no regrets. I did try to find somewhere to check my email every 5-7 days, but that's the extent of my digital use.

Thank you, everyone. Tinkatinker, yes, I decided that a ukulele (a lightweight travel one) is more essential than a cell phone! It's the best substitute for a different kind of "connectivity." I may find that a ukulele can do wonders that a cell phone will never do in challenging situations. : )
