Oh i did most of the alternative paths on the Norte and the full coastal route on the Portuguese. Still way more highways on the Norte than the Portuguese.
I loved both, don’t get me wrong if someone tells me they can only do one and which is better as a whole, i still suggest they Portuguese.
I’ve done both. I would suggest the Camino Portuguese first only because the Norte has too much walking on highways which i found aggravating at times... but both have equally as amazing scenery.
They are - but in the remote towns they charge you from wherever they leave to pick you up... so the meter may start before you get on....
Also LOTS of city bus options even in most remote towns since the Norte is almost always close to a small highway.
I am on the Camino Norte at the moment (yup - decided to do it). I started in Bilbao for lack of time... but everyone tells me the best part is between Irún and Bilbao that i basically missed the most beautiful part.
Just a thought. Lots of options to do short stages if you have the time and...
I am on the Camino Norte right now (i think today is day 12?!? I’ve lost count) and without a gps - i have had a few problems here and there but overall ok. The alternative routes aren’t always marked but if the ocean is on your right and the sun is behind you - you’re okay! :)
You will do...
Thank you... just got to my albergue in Amandi and the hospitaliaro confirmed it was the way she would recommend if i have an extra day. So it looks like I’ll be walking toward Oviedo tomorrow morning (will take the two days to not kill my legs).
Thanks for your input everyone!!! :)
Interesting viewpoint. Everyone i meet (and my wise pilgrim book) says it’s a full day of walking between trucks, trains, motorways - worst than walking through any other big city on any Camino. :/
Thanks for your reply. I’ll consider Gijón.
I am on the Camino de Norte right now and thought i read somewhere that i could skip gijon by walking an extra day through Oviedo and then return on the Norte.
Is that route much nicer / better? I’ve heard how bad the stretch is before and after Gijón and I’d rather not have to take a bus (and...
A private albergue has reopened (right in front of the beach) in La Isla. I am here right now. It’s VERY basic, and expensive (20euros for a bed in a dorm 24 beds) but the staff has been pleasant.
Thank you!! :) i have booked my first night. Will see afterward how it goes! :)
And you’re right - i always just go over the hill lol but it’s nice to know mentally how high the hill is and how many there will be that day to take into consideration how far i can go that day. 30km on flat-ish...
I have spent hours going over everyone’s advice for this Camino and I’m finally leaving in a few days to start my journey!
I’ve got a couple more questions :
- should i book a day in advance accommodation? I see very little large Albergues on route... i prefer albergues but don’t mind...
I was planning on walking the Camino Del North (starting in late-April) but I am getting very worried with the description of extreme hills and highway walking. Is this still the case? Ideally, I'd like to follow the coast line as much as possible.
I am a bit out of shape due to recent...
