Suggestions on getting from Madrid airport to Leon?

Yes. If memory serves you need to go to terminal 4(on a bus or shuttle) and then get direct bus from there to Leon. I did it in August and just booked the bus while in the queue. They won't let you on bus without booking. Are you doing the Salvador?? It's amazing. Daniel

    Staying in Padron

If you can get a train or bus back to Caldas de rei there are beautiful swimming area/ waterfalls just 2km along the river outside. We spent a rest day there last August. Its 18kms from Caldas to Padron which is the recommended stage on the central route . Caldas also has natural hot springs etc...

    Shoes for the Salvador

Hi. Just saw your post. Same as Peregrino 2000 I'd also suggest Trail runners, shoes. I wore my Assics gel for the Salvador in August and despite the heat no blisters and feet fine. No need for boots. Daniel

Starting in A Guarda but how to get there?

If you fly into Porto its very easy. Take the Metro within Airport straight to Campanha then take train to Caminha. Take the boat over which is part of the coastal camino anyway and its only 3.6 km to A Guarda from there. I did this last year and arrived Caminha about 6pm. Was in A Guarda for...

Pilgrim Menus/Menu Del Dia in Portugal?

I have walked from Coimbra and also from Porto. The average was 40 euro per day because some towns before Porto the accommodation was more expensive. All Portuguese restaurants have a menu during the day which is generally inexpensive and generally cheaper than Spain. Obviously beware of high...

Pilgrim Menus/Menu Del Dia in Portugal?

Yes indeed. I stopped for a coffee on the way to the supermarket and left the cafe with a huge portion of takeout soup, baguette, wonderful pastry for dessert and also the coffee for the huge sum of euro 4.40. The whole day including the albergue cost 9.40. No issues with Ponte de lima...

    The culture has changed...sadly

A wonderful Camino is the Portugese interior which I believe joins the Vdlp. Very quiet, genuine walkers and lots of interesting towns. We went last October and had some great days walking in but sunshine and heavy rain. Equally as nice.

    Limited beds in Albergues

Apologies. Just saw that you are on the coast. Many pilgrims I had met had crossed back over to the Central route. Good look going forward. Its not a great situation when you have to book ahead. Sometimes however when they use booking.com it is advisable to ring direct. In Rubiàes 8 pilgrims had...

    Limited beds in Albergues

Hi. I've just returned and had no issue with accommodation. Rubieas Ponte De Lima, Valenca etc plenty of availability. Are you on the Coast??

    Dog from Hell ?

I was very fearful going on the Salvador, having been bitten badly at home while training just 3 weeks before I left. Psychologically I was a mess but once on actual camino I was far more relaxed. I do believe I met the two same big dogs while exiting a village and the magic of the Camino kicked...

Solo walkers - what kinds of food do you buy at grocery stores?

I cant really give you much in terms of food ideas but I will say I've had the most amazing dinners/ lunches when buying from the supermarket and whenever I do a pasta dish I keep it vegetarian so it keeps for lunch the following day. Its also a great way to meet other pilgrims and so much...

    Boxer shorts - any recommendations

I wear nike/regatta swim shorts when walking. They have a built in mesh brief so no need for boxers.

    Portugues Central Route

See your post. 4km or so before Caldas there are also very beautiful falls and a large park. Im sure you visited there also. I always find the bit of research before each stage opens up amazing opportunities. I also spent two nights(different times) in Valenca and had the experience of walking...

    Portugues Central Route

Caldas de rei is a wonderful place to spend a rest day. We did last week and spent half day swimming and relaxing at the nearby waterfalls

Irún to Bilbao in March or October or wait for another window?

It's always hard to gauge. We continued our camino one June from Santander and met pilgrims who had made videos of the torrential rain and mud on the first week out from Irun. I think that week brought them all closer together as it did involve some level of endurance. So that would have been a...

    Coffee in the Morning?

I don't drink but definitely need coffee. It's a but of an issue alright but in time I too may give up.😏

    Coffee in the Morning?

I always pack coffee sachets so even if we just have use of microwave then I can have coffee. I used to be a bit of a snob, wanting proper coffee etc but on the Camino this is often difficult, especially for early risers. Essentially it is more about the caffeine and not the coffee so I gave up...

    Another way to Finisterre

Not sure if this helps but I have practically all the routes from France/ Netherlands/ Belgium etc etc downloaded on maps.me. As the article suggests the coastline on Northern Spain is battered by the Atlantic and very similar to the west coast of Ireland, if you've ever been.

Any recommendations of places to stay in Rubiaes?

They are near Caldas de rei. 2 stages before Santiago. Nice little town with lots of albergues/ hostels and restaurants. It also has a Bamboo garden full of the rare Black bamboo and Hot springs. We have booked 2 nights there for these reasons. It was one of my favourite memories when I did this...
