The Art of Buying a New Backpack

My husband and I have used Decathlon backpacks, tshirts and socks in multiple caminos. We have also seen dozens if not hundreds of other pilgrims with Decathlon backpacks, As you say, the brand is popular in Europe! In my opinion, many items are good value for money. Our current backpacks are...

    Getting really close! Buen Camino!

    Madrid City Walks

I'd go even smaller than the museums above and suggest Museum Cerralbo. The house of a rich guy that was preserved for future generations. He was super nerd, so he had some pieces of art but also a TELEPHONE (woooowww), an electric light bulb and some other cool things. A nice little place...

"The Way, My Way" in Sydney

So, I've just found about this event and thought it would be good to share here. The movie has been mentioned in previous posts, like this one. Unfortunately, I cant be in Sydney on that Thursday, but maybe others can! At Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace, in Cremorne...

    Tomorrow is the day! Yesssssss!!!!!!!!!!!

Ooohh, it's lovely to read you are going again! From the start, I think of most of us knew you would be back! Please share all the wonder, all the enthusiasm (and even the not-so-great things) in the forum, we will love to follow your walk again. Buen Camino!

How often do you take a break?

I totally agree with that. My husband tended to "push too hard", so we instituted a break every hour, for 5-10 minutes. It worked extremelly well, as it was a very natural rythm for me and he also adapted to it quickly. Like @good_old_shoes, it was just a quick stop for some water, feet rest...

Timing - Flight Arrival to Boarding the Alsa Bus at Madrid's T4

I think you have time, but I'd also leave to buy tickets on the spot (unless they are so cheap that you don't mind the gamble). Depending on the day there are also buses in the afternoon that could be a back up plan. You can also go to the Renfe (train) counter and see if there are any...

Did you get tired of wearing same colours for weeks?

I usually carry 3 sets of clothes (1 wear, 2 spare). The t-shirts and jacket are always in VERY bright colours, like neon yellow, super pink and crayola blue. Same with socks and even the hairband. My reasoning being that if I ever roll down a cliff, I want the rescue services to find me really...

    Luggage storage

It`s been a few years, but I also used Tuitrans on my camino. They collected my luggage from the hotel in Porto, kept it in their deposit and delivered to a hotel I booked in Santiago the day before my arrival. They were really responsive. Good to hear the services are still on point :)

Which are the “wilder” (least paved, most rural) Spanish routes?

Except for one morning of walk by the highway, the short Camino Lebaniego is an amazing experience, and very, VERY wild if you opt for the variants. It runs on the other side of the mountains where the Salvador (mentioned above) goes. I wrote about my experience in this thread. The views... i...

    Infected by the Camino bug

Oh, the Portuguese is such a great route with great food! I have not walked the VdlP (yet), but I visited Sevilla last year and it´s a wonderful place! I hope we never get 'cured' of the camino bug!

    is this too crazy?

If you don´t want to take buses, you can go south via the Camino Vadiniense in San Vicente de La barquera (around 15km after Comillas) until Leon, and go back North on the Salvador. Sounds like an awesome trip regardless :)

Pilgrims from Australia and the wonderful New Zealand

Three caminos and counting, can't stop thinking about walking number four. The cost is enourmous, but worth it, as said above. As for trails in Australia, I started walking the Aussie Camino (Portland-Penola) in 2021, but fell sick on day 2 and had to go back home. It seemed a nice route...

    CF Bus Station Grumble

At least it seems to be well signposted and there are escalator and rolling ramps. Looks like the first yellow arrows I`ll follow in my next camino are the ones poiting to Bus Terminal :P

    CF Bus Station Grumble

Where do the buses depart from now???? The old T4 bus stop was so convenient for overseas pilgrims going to their starting cities, I'm curious to see what changed!

Where do you shop? [in the UK]

I'm a big Decathlon fan. My walking T-shirts, socks, pants, hat, headlamp and backpack come from there. EDIT: duh, sorry, I missed the "UK-based" pilgrims bit. I'm in Australia, decathlon is a French chain that is also big in Spain. Not sure if available in the UK.

    Glee!

I jumped into this topic because I love the TV series of the same name... although that was not the idea, this is indeed a very happy topic! Buen Camino!

    Church named Madre de Dios

Somewhat common in Portuguese as well (Mãe de Deus). One in Açores islands: https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Igreja_de_Nossa_Senhora_da_M%C3%A3e_de_Deus One in Brazil: https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santu%C3%A1rio_Nossa_Senhora_M%C3%A3e_de_Deus

What are your favorite Camino misspellings on the forum?

I just spit my coffee. I'm a native speaker of Portuguese, and really don't mind much the language-butchering, because some people at least try. But the one that actually annoyed me was the person who turned to his camino companion and said "It's actually 'buen camino'" after another pilgrim...

    Volunteering as a Hospitalero/a

Can people enrol in a courser like this if they have no plans of being a hospitalero in the near future, but are interested in learning new skills? Or are you expected to be available at some point, given the shortage of hospitaleros? (I totally understand if the course is for people who are...
