    Accommodation recommendations for Baiona

We stayed in the Paradore. Was a real treat. You can join the Paradores club for free. It gives you preferential rates and special offers. When leaving Baiona, don’t follow the official route which takes you a little inland. Instead walk around the bay keeping the sea on your left. Keep on the...

    Embarrassing moments

I was caught short and needed a “wild wee” ( and yes, I do take my loo paper away with me). I was on a slight incline with my back facing down instead of up. Lost my balance and ended up on my back like a turtle. I couldn’t right myself, but did manage to wriggle my underwear up. Eventually...

Long live the traditional Spanish shops

I wouldn’t be surprised if they did indeed stock the odd ferret or two. They have everything else you could imagine 🤣🤣

In Burgos there’s a double fronted store, on one side you can buy underwear and on the other , fans! Also love a ferreteria!

Where would you plan to spend an extra day?

For the beach, I’d stop in Tapia de Casariego. Pretty little port and lovely beach. But there are so many lovely spots to rest. When I walked ,I had a day off every five or six days so had the chance to enjoy the surroundings.

SJPDP annual pilgrim numbers since 1996

I’ve walked three, with four different people and none of us have claimed a Compostela , as you say it’s impossible to estimate how many there are.

And that doesn’t count the enormous amount of people who don’t claim a Compostela 🤔

Senior Walking the Portuguese Coastal Route in the Rain: Advice Needed

As an aside, if you’re starting in Baiona, I would recommend not following the official way marked path. Follow the coastal path, it’s really easy and beautiful. Just keep the sea on your left side, you can’t get lost and you’ll eventually come back to the official path. Buen Camino

Best towns near Porto along the Camino

I loved the walk out of Porto along the river to Matoshinos.

    Cobblestones and Setts

I remember plenty of setts but not true cobble stones. I walked it 10 weeks after an ankle fracture. As long as I stayed to the side of the path I didn’t find it terribly uncomfortable. what I would be concerned about is that some of the unpaved areas are very rough with some very steep...

Palace of the Kings of Navarre, Olite

Olite is definitely worth a visit. It’s the closest thing to a fairy castle I’ve ever seen.

    yellow arrows

I’ve never used an app and if I did go astray there was usually someone to re-route me. Perhaps I’ve just been lucky x

    Accommodations

I had this problem when I tried to book a long time in advance. Look again at the end of the year and I think you’ll find more choice.

LIVE from the Camino Coastal from Porto

From Baiona, don’t follow the yellow arrows inland. Instead follow the path next to the beach around the bay. Just keep following the coast, keeping the sea on your left. It’s a beautiful walk and will then lead you back to the official route. It’s really easy. Enjoy.

Only a problem if he wants to claim a Compostela.

Skipping Stops while walking the Portoguese backwards

I’ve heard that the Portuguese is very difficult to walk backwards but have nothing to back this up with. I see no reason why you wouldn’t be allowed to stay in Albergues, no one would know which way you are walking. I found Portugal to be a little cheaper than the Norte.

Has del Norte been crowded lately (April 2023)?

Hi Chris, We stayed mainly in private rooms but the pilgrims who were using the albergues had no problems. May be worth booking ahead once you join the Frances where there are suddenly hoards of people! There were enough pilgrims to have a chat or a beer with but not the large groups you will...
