From the thread title I gather that you are walking from Lisbon to SdC. We walked the Portugues from Lisbon last year, and found that there are no transportation services before Porto. By the time we got to Porto we were so used to carrying out packs that we didn't feel the need for...
As I had planned, I got a poncho this time and was quite happy with it. Walked the Portugues in September, had three rain days, and the poncho worked well. I did like it better than the jacket I used on my first Camino.
I got the 'Pteromy Hooded Rain Poncho' on Amazon, about $20. It has the...
I like it! Keep it simple and use an average of the above numbers, i.e. 36L and 7kg.
I used an Osprey Stratos 36L and it worked well for me on the CF. I believe it was around the 7kg mark fully loaded.
I did consider getting something slightly larger, e.g. a Talon or Kestrel in the 44L...
We just last week switched over to T-Mobile, specifically because of their seamless coverage in Europe. In the past (Cons. Cellular) we either paid the international surcharges and tried to use wifi as much as possible, or got a local SIM card and dealt with the hassle of a different phone...
Wow... that's pretty impressive, guys. Indeed, I can't imagine walking 12 hour days and/or average 30+ miles a day with a heavy load. But to each his/her own.
However, the OP indicated that she is currently at the 10-mile level, and planning to "increase it to 15 once a week" before she...
Walking from SJPP to SdC took us 35 days, including 2 rest days, so avg 25 km (16 mi) per day. We're mid-60's, in decent shape, and walked at what we considered a comfortable pace.
From your description it sounds like you're in similar shape as we were when we started. If so, I would not...
We're planning to visit Granada and Cordoba after we finish the Portugues (from Lisbon). Depending on how we feel after the CP, we may even walk from Granada to Cordoba, but we'll probably take the bus.
From what I've found out so far about visits to the Alhambra, you need to book well ahead...
I'm afraid you completely misunderstood my post. The issue is NOT whether I consider it boring: I have followed it from the beginning because the topic interested me. However, we are now at post #69 and most of the posts in quite a while have been rehashing the same points, or are very specific...
Considering the almost infinite number of intricacies related to the various countries in/from which you can make your purchases, there is no way anybody can fully answer all of them. So IMHO it might be best to wrap up this discussion and wish everybody good luck.
Based on a number of posts on this site, the main US mobile providers (e.g. Verizon) still charge a lot for international access, sometimes around $10/day.
I have Consumer Cellular (yeah, the old folks choice) because they're cheap, but I'm about to switch to T-Mobile because coverage in Europe...
I'm on Medicare, which doesn't cover outside the US, so I'm looking for separate coverage during our upcoming Camino. Do you have any experience submitting a claim with Axa?
I used Squaremouth to look for insurers, and the Axa policy indeed looks good. However, the reviews of both Axa (and...
Sorry, Medicare will not cover your overseas costs. There may be exceptions, but it's not clear what they are. In general, if you have Medicare, you're advised to get a separate overseas medical insurance policy.
However, the difficulty is finding a good one, i.e. one that will actually pay...
I had the exact same problem: by the time we got to Burgos, my feet were killing me.
Like most, I started years ago with MOAB's, then switched to Oboz Sawtooth's (on the advice of an REI guy) because of the supposed better 'structure'. I did all my practice hikes with the Sawtooth's, and...
Very nice work! We're interested in the Mozarabe, especially the part from Granada to Cordoba. One of the less popular routes, but very interesting historically. We plan to walk from Granada to Merida, depending on the weather and route profile, and then jump over to the Portugues.
We walked the CF in September 2019 and had only 1 or 2 rainy days. Our REI rain jackets kept our upper body dry, and our Osprey's built-in pack covers also worked well. However, we didn't have rain pants, so eventually the water running down soaked everything below the jacket: our pants, socks...
Truly inspiring!
During our 2019 CF we met a lady from Oakland CA in an albergue in San Martin (just past Leon) who was 82. She was doing it solo, carrying her own pack, and having a grand time. Her daily average was about 10 miles, so probably a 50+ day schedule.
I told here that she was my...
Thanks @jungleboy and @WalkerForever, that is great information. Since you both agree that the Coimbra to Porto section is not worth it, would you recommend jumping over to the coastal route in that area? I assume that would also be less hot during July/August.
@WalkerForever We did the Frances in 2019 and would like to do something similar in length, so we're strongly considering the Portugues, from Lisbon to SdC. However, many reports about the Lisbon to Porto stretch are a bit discouraging, especially the first half of the route after leaving...
Thanks @mspath, that was an excellent recommendation. After reading the sample chapter following the link you provided, I got the book from my local library. The first half of the book was nothing like I expected based on the linked sample, but quite interesting nevertheless - a very engaging...
