    Bad water

On my unexpected Spanish vacation following my aborted camino, I was in the hotel bathroom for two days in Madrid before returning to the US. Immediately prior to that, I had been in La Linea/Gibraltar and also picked up lunch for the train at the nice supermarket in the Malaga train station. I...

I made it one day- what I wished I had understood more clearly

I have had enough. I made the very difficult decision to humble myself- to come back here after only making it one day- and share exactly what it was that I wished I had understood more fully before setting off. Most people would have never come back. I did. In the space of where this thread is...

I made it one day- what I wished I had understood more clearly

I did consult a foot doctor and thought I could work with it. I was wrong. Excitement and anticipation pushed me past good judgement.

I made it one day- what I wished I had understood more clearly

Katharina, read my original post. I clearly said- I normally pull money out via ATM but this time had cash. After they quoted a 30% exchange rate, I used the ATM after all. Your post “reads” very condescending. I’m sure it’s not intended that way, but it does. I included that segment because the...

I made it one day- what I wished I had understood more clearly

To answer a couple of questions- I had one week available for personal time off and chose to walk the section between Pamplona and Logrono, braking that 4 days part into 6 shorter days, knowing my lower capabilities (you can do shorter stages). Yes, I "only" walked the 12k from Pamplona to AdP...

I made it one day- what I wished I had understood more clearly

I made it one day- Pamplona to the top of Alto de Perdon. Back home now and mulling it over, there are things I wish had been clearer before I left. And before I get too far- I take full responsibility for not fully understanding. But I do need to let y'all know there were multiple places where...

Where are the May Francés pilgrims?

heading out the door to the airport right now! :)

    And... I'm off!

a big thank you to everyone who has assisted me for the last 2+ years in getting ready. My pack is packed (6.3kg/14#) and I am off to the airport in the morning. After being Covid cancelled twice, I'm finally on my way!

Camino awesome, Santiago not so much

I felt that way in Cusco, Peru before Machu Picchu. It was jarring to feel like a walking dollar sign and have hustler after hustler walk up to your outdoor café table trying to sell you something and not leaving until you rudely yelled "no" and then the next one would come try. I had one of...

    Bathrooms on buses

I was debating Logrono-Madrid by bus or train. This just sealed it. Train, it is!

How fast do you walk on the Camino?

I got passed by a daschund on the downhill portion of a walk.

    Ibuprofen in Spain

People are so polite... "damage to digestive system"= loose bowels. Yup, know this one from experience. So, if you find yourself having a very sudden need to poo, take a look at your ibuprofen usage. Even the 200mg ones can add up over time.

    Hiking at Night?

anybody notice that nobody who posts that they leave in the middle of the night is ever one of those pilgrims who disturbs others and politely takes all their prepacked things to the common room to get dressed and never ever makes noise?

Starting on the 27th of May (Frances)!

@aniastepien @Schamber @Tickbush I am starting in Pamplona on the 28th, and as I am the slowest walker ever, all of y'all are sure pass me along the way somewhere between Pamplona and Logrono. Wave hi at the lady in the pink hat! edited to change the date- overnight flight had me messed up!

In praise of Motel Truckstops on the Camino

I love a good truck stop meal.

    It’s busy

Respectfully, not everyone wants to stay in a gymnasium filled body to body with 100 sets of 10E bunkbeds and the snoring, burping, coughing, sneezing, and farting that comes along with 200 of your closet newest friends, none of whom you know the health or hygiene of. Add in my 4 times a night...

Lost & Found (Found) Lost my credit card between Larrasoaña and Pamplona

what a fantastic ending to your story!

    It’s busy

Accommodations are not limited to warehouse size municipal albergues with floors upon floors of bunk beds and hundreds of pilgrims in the same space. Also, there are many fine small, family run hotels in Pamplona that are not listed in the Brierley guide. Hotels.com or Booking.com list many of...

    Albergue Prices

I prebooked 7 nights from Pamplona-Logrono for a few weeks from now and the prices are 20-25% higher than the published guidebooks. Almost all are requiring a card guarantee to reserve with cancellation 2-7 days in advance, so not a cancel the night before situation as previously described in...

LIVE from the Camino I’m on my way

Wow. How rude. Did they pay for the pilgrim dinner when they checked in? That would have been the time to say something. I am allergic to shellfish and wouldn't have been able to eat that, nor would I have thought to say no shellfish, and frankly, I wouldn't say no shellfish to a host after...
