I agree...it really doesn't matter if your shoes or boots are goretex or not. I have both and it really does not matter. I have expensive waterproof socks and even using them with the goretex boots after a while you end up with wet feet.
In Gijon I took a 30 min train to Oviedo and switched. The Primitivo was great after all the asphalt of the Norte. I ended up going back to Gijon after finishing the Primitivo and then finished the Norte. I am glad I did.
I walked the Primitivo in September and was very glad to have boots with me as the trails were muddy and the surfaces very rocky. I just put a video on youTube of that walk..https://youtu.be/yXi7sFUybJM
For daytime use whilst walking I use a Eagle Creek hidden pocket that attaches to my belt and tucks in or I put it in one of my cargo pockets in my pants... For evenings or shower time or out on the town I put everything into my PacSafe mini pouch and lock it to the bunk bed. One even can fit...
If you have a hard time finding a place to stay, call or go the local Tourist Office, they usually have a list of places with available rooms. You can find the office and it's # on Google maps.
I walked the Frances from Roncesvalles. I stareted November 24th snd finished in Santiago Dec 24... I never had a problem finding open albergues. I have a video of that walk:
I started my Camino Frances the end of November and finished in Santiago on December 24... It was a great one. There always is an Albergue open at the end of the stage. Use the Aprinca link posted peregringa2000 above. It constantly gets updated.
If you want to see what it is like to walk the...
If he is only wearing down the soles and the rest of the shoe is in good shape you can get any cobbler (zapatero) to re-sole them for next to nothing... I had mine redone for less than 30 euros and they are now better than they were new... new!
I have an Osprey AND a Rei Trail 40... I once hiked days with the Osprey for a few days and it was definitely not as comfortable as the Rei Trail 40. If you are planning a longer Camino I would definitely not use the Osprey and go with something thst is only for hiking not s dual purpose one...
I keep my passport and extra cc in a hidden pocket from Eagle Creek that attaches to my belt and tuck it into my pants. For the nighttime or when going to the shower I have a small Pacsafe safe-pouch that I can attach to the frame of the bed where I can put all my valuables in...
I also try not to use Bookings, but the problem is that in August most everything is fully booked as many in Spain are on holiday so there are few options left to find a place to stay.
When I started walking the Norte last year in August I found that calling the local tourist information office was the best option as they pretty much always had a list of available rooms that were not very expensive even when bookings and others had none available or were super expensive. You...
I did the Norte last year, and started the last week of August thinking it wouldn't be a problem, but it was not much fun and quite more expensive than expected as all the hostels and albergues were fully booked. Finding places to stay was also not easy, even now and then the local tourist...
I have been using Nike Trail Wildhorse... They are very nice and wide up front. I recently got a new pair Nike Trail 1/2 size bigger and they are incredible comfortable.
I would walk the coastal out from Porto and up to Vila do Conde. Hosteling International in Vila do Conde is fantastic! It a newly renovated Mansion with fantastic dorms and also private rooms, but I would recommend the dorms as they are only 4 people and you will probably have it to yourself...
I would recommend some good insoles for your boots or sneakers. I walked 4 different caminos this summer - over 2000km - and had 0 problems, I credit the insoles and also making sure my backpack weighed under 10% body weight. I tried many before I settled for SOLE brand ones that one heats up...
