Returning Home & Preventing a Bedbug Infestation!

STERI -FAB is the insecticide the professional exterminator recommended to me. It is available on Amazon , has good human safety studies. It is alcohol-based and requires soaking the article.

Returning Home & Preventing a Bedbug Infestation!

Actually, I need to contradict the freezer treatment. A professional exterminator told me about using an industrial -40 degree freezer on bedbugs: they initially looked dead, but revived from hibernation after an hour. HEAT melts the outer covering (shell, essentially) of the bug: 1 hour at 125...

The one thing I should have done before I left for the Camino

Record a new message on your phone telling people you won't be checking your voice mail for the duration (while I had a Spanish SIM card in my phone); the first time I forgot to do that, I came home to a big pile of phone messages asking why I wasn't answering their messages.

Shantiago - a Camino song in shanty style

Love it! I'm serving as a hospitalera in April this year (soon!!) and will bring the link to play it for our pilgrims!

Albergue San Miguel, the painting albergue, is on sale for personal reasons!

I stayed there in October 2021 and loved it! If I can put in a plug for anyone considering the purchase, it felt solidly built, great location, nice size and layout. Remember the 11 year old from Alaska who was painting that day? Best wishes!

Tell me your “everything is going haywire on my Camino” stories

@truenorthpilgrim , sorry you're sick, hopefully it's brief! I have a "everything falling apart" hospitalero story: we were cooking dinner for 16 pilgrims, and just as we started boiling water for pasta, the propane ran out (fortunately everyone had finished their hot showers). It was a...

Bathtubs and Other Essentials While on the Camino!

My room in Hotel Akeretta (just past Larasoano, and used in filming "The Way") had a wonderful bathtub; it was shorter than a standard American tub, but I'm short so I didn't mind.

Forum members in Santiago now. Please celebrate the arrival of an extraordinary peregrino.

I PM’d @JabbaPapa, but I also tested positive for COVID this morning 😭. I was on the Portuguese Coastal route and my walking partner got sick; she thinks she picked it up the day before she started walking, at a medical appointment 😵‍💫. I tested positive 4 days ago and have been quarantining in...

I arrive tomorrow as well. Does anyone have a photo of JabbaPapa?

Buying a SIM card in Madrid

Vodaphone is currently running a special for 50 GB at 10 euros for 4 weeks, with ability to top off easily. Working well for me on the Francés right now.

Packing List : Food - What food/nutritional items are in your bag, when you leave home ?

I have had pate impounded by security (apparently it's considered fluid enough that the 4 oz can exceeded the 3 oz maximum for fluids).

    Digital credential

I walked the Francés in September and October last year, and no one I saw was using the digital credential, no one was talking about it. Which surprised me because I had read about it in the Forum.

Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice on the Camino: Cost and Availability

On the Frances 3 months ago, fresh OJ averaged about 3-4€. There was a fruit stand after Hospital de Órbigo with a hand press. I loved it so much I bought my own hand press when I got home.

Discovering a Hidden Treasure: Camino Poster from the 1980s Found in Closet

I’m pretty sure I saw a copy of that hanging in an albergue in Nájera this fall.

    Resonance

Interesting Ted talk, the part where he talks about resonance is just the last 3 minutes. I like the word “resonance “ to describe that feeling of deep connection and harmony with our surroundings, and definitely recall moments walking on Camino with an incredible feeling of peace.

    Snack Bars made of Oats

A question from a US resident: what is “golden syrup”? I saw someone posted substituting molasses and honey, but what is the British original?

Socks colours - not a serious thread

Because of an orthopedic injury to one ankle, I had the "opportunity" to wear different socks on each foot, vastly increasing the number of colors I would wear. The injured foot sported a medical-grade (boring) compression sock, covered by a Darn Tuff sock, and the un-injured foot had an Injinji...

Favorite Spanish recipes post /pre camino you’ve made at home

My hubby and I first walked on the Frances in 2018 and fell in love with Caldo Gallego, although he is vegan and had to pick out all of the pork products from the soup. He developed a vegan version to make at home (using smoked paprika to make up for the lack of smoked pork products): Vegan...

Funny Camino Stories, Experiences or Pictures

On the Frances in 2018, my husband usually walked with me every step of the day, as I had been badly injured in a car accident a few years earlier. One day I encouraged him to sleep late so I could walk a solo leg, knowing he’d catch up with me easily. We ended up missing each other (probably...

    “Jack from Ireland”

Here it is, St. Patrick’s Day, and all the local bars in Washington state are closed. We looked for a good Irish movie to watch at home, and came up with “The Way”, because of “Jack from Ireland.” I guess that’s as good a reason as any to watch it...
