I used Pilgrim backpack transfer during my Camino Portugues and had a really good experience at a cheap price. They also offered to keep it in their lockers in Santiago de Compostela while I visited the city and the Cathedral.
I have never ever encounted racial discrimination during my Camino journeys. I could defenitely say Spain is a bit "antique" when it comes to racial views, specially in the small towns where is pretty much just old spanish people. However they believes are, they will not be nasty to you.

It really depends on you, what you eat and how much you walk. If you just eat spanish pastries and greasy food during the Camino, no matter how much you walk you'll either put weight on or keep your own weight. But again, Spain has a lot of healthy homemade food, so if you make smart choices...
Kanga is right, ING works wonders in both Australia and Spain, and their fees are very small if you tell them you're gonna travel. I used both ING CC and Commonwealth Money Card and the fees with Commonwealth were just too high.
Do you know which Camino you want to do? Depending on the Camino, the weather will change. For example, the weather in the Camino Portugues in April-May will be warmer and less wet than the Northern or French Camino during that period, as it tends to rain quite often during Spring on the North...
I would bring a small hairdryer with me during the trip, not only for the hair, but because during the Camino it will definitely rain and you will be able to dry your clothes and shoes, and it's a quick fix for when you need to wash and dry underwear. For me it's on the must-packing list.
