I have done a combination of camping and accomodation on 5 Caminos and the 88 Temples in Japan. We never cook and try to camp where there is running water. Always take your rubbish with you and leave the site as you find it.
My advice to you is to buy a cheap lightweight 2 man dome tent that...
You just go online the basic is unlimited medical and $2000 luggage that’s the one I get. I really just want medical but luggage comes with it am in USA for 6 weeks the most expensive Country for Medical and it was about 220 with a 200 excess
I always use Woolworths travel insurance, by far the cheapest for Australians. I have never needed to make a claim but as you know it is a reputable company.
Good Luck Dan, follow your dreams..... Santiago real estate prices are quite high now. Plenty of old buildings to renovate I’m sure you could get plenty of people to help though. I never stay in an Albergue in Santiago as they are as expensive as private rooms, unless you go out a bit.
There is a good reason the Francais is more popular it is beautiful and has good facilities.
The Portuguese is also beautiful but so many cobblestone paths and less atmosphere. I recommend the Francais always for first time pilgrims. Burn Camino.
Unfortunately many people believe Donativo is free especially the younger ones with limited budgets, I always give what the private Albergues are charging in the town. I believe donativo should be changed to 5 euro minimum. If someone genuinely has no money
