Yes why not? I was lucky to have an inspiring artist do mine. Even for something as simple as a tau cross it's worth thinking about the design in detail beforehand.
Very comprehensive stats dougfitz- what a range of possibilities! Frida1 looks like a selection of light layers and a water resistant shell would keep you comfortable as conditions change.
Just noticed it's looking super hot in central Europe and NE Spain this week, with 40degC forecast for Pamplona. This is unusual for June and pilgrims might not be expecting conditions that make walking potentially dangerous.
I'm amazed at his capacity to evoke a sense of place and time with a few well chosen words. There's a collection of Cider with Rosie and other editions in the bar of his local pub, The Woolpack, which probably hasn't changed a great deal since he lived in Slad.
As the heatwave continues across Europe, with temperatures forecast over 40degC for some parts of the Camino Frances, here's Laurie Lee heaping up the crushed ice in one of my favourite passages. I hope it helps us all to keep cool:
"By now it was noon, with almost everyone under cover, in the...

Personally I think travel insurance is a good idea, I go for something basic to mainly cover any serious medical issues. Heres some ideas though it might be useful to say which country you are from if you want specific suggestions...
Compared to some other medieval pilgrimage routes, the main Spanish Caminos have had recognition, support and infrastructure for a very long time. Plus there's the sun, wine and often good company too.
Try a pilgrimage to a comparative medieval centre like Canterbury and the difference is...
I think I'll need be needing GPS for my next pilgrim adventure along a largely unmarked route. On previous travels Maps.me has worked great on an android phone. Now I need reading glasses I'm finding it a bit of a performance getting everything out and on to check where to go and would like to...
Great post. I've heard that some Camino routes go back to the 8th century so you might have a lot of scope for choosing the 'authentic' city boundaries to suit your transport requirements!
Thanks for reminder of my favourite Laurie Lee book. Its difficult nowadays to imagine the extent of his adventure, a lot of it on foot- playing his violin for pesetas as he travelled down through Spain. I particularly remember his poetic descriptions of the impact that hallucinatory searing...
Mmm this thread is getting me hungry... Also on the kitchen etiquette front I don't think it's helpful to leave behind extra cooked pasta, rice, sauce etc without specifically offering it to other pilgrims. If just left, it will be thrown away by whoever does kitchen clean up the following day-...
Discovering there is a Masked Bed Bug Hunter has made my day. And no I didn't just make it up.
Unfortunately they do bite people if there aren't enough bed bugs to go round -but it would at least make a change for pilgrims.
I hope your passport journey goes well John. There are news stories here of an increase in UK citizens applying for citizenship of EU countries so they can continue to have free movement or residency . As many have already posted this seems all unclear territory so far.
Fabulous video thanks for posting- this could revolutionise the whole Camino experience.:)
Most developmental descriptions I've seen start with tip toes, then heel down then heel-toe walking on into later childhood.
In practice everyone comes up with their own version of how to use their...
After three Camino endings in Santiago I've come to accept the strong possibility that I'll be feeling some kind of loss.
The city is lovely but also a big and busy tourist centre so places for quiet contemplation need a bit of seeking out. And then there are the meetings with Camino companions...
