Is it necessary to book a place to sleep every day on the CF?

We walked at similar dates/times in 2022. Like you, I was hoping to do the Portugues this year in the May/June period, but have bumped it to 2025 as we have USA trip this year. Enjoy!

Is it necessary to book a place to sleep every day on the CF?

I walked from 2nd May in 2022. I booked 2-3 days ahead because a wanted a degree of certainty - but that’s me. The last stretch from Sarria was chaos due to very large groups eg. 400 from one company doing fund raising week. This pushed the normal b&b and hotel users into using the hostels. I...

    Weather on Camino Frances May/June

Walked from 2nd May 2022 from SJPP for 5.5 weeks. Merino long sleeved shirts, light padded down jacket (242g), lightweight waterproof jacket, zip-off trousers, merino underwear, wool socks. Had a set of light gloves and a beanie buried in my rucksack. Had the odd cool morning when I started in...

LIVE from the Camino Struggling with doubt on the Camino Frances

I wrote down this thought I had last year: “Perhaps the Camino is not about finding the answer to a question, but is just about better understanding or defining the question you need to answer.” DBC, Sahagun, May 2022.

LIVE from the Camino Struggling with doubt on the Camino Frances

I had some challenging sections last year May. History of bad knees, feet playing up after the first week and not the fittest I’ve been. Shortened the days every once in a while and planned rest days - 1 extra day in Burgos, 1 extra day in Leon. In Leon I was champing at the bit to go but...

Live from the Camino - Churches are closed

Agree - Los Arcos mass was a great experience with a small group of pilgrims.

    Booking Auberge Borda

Watch the weather forecast in the 2-3 days before you leave for the first 1-2 days walking over the pass. I walked at the start of May 2022, forecast was for snow. Packed an old set of thermals, in the end not needed as rain overnight had washed most of the snow off the paths. Although 2 days...

    Guidebook Guidance please!

I bought Brierleys and the Cicerone Camino guide books. As a first timer (2022) aiming for only 20km average per day the Cicerone was more helpful. Especially the walking plans at the back of the book. It lacks the more “spiritual” perspective of Brierley.

FYI: Cash vs credit card on the Camino Frances in 2023

I had a mix of cash and card on me. Cash represented my basic budget per day and I almost always used that. About 5 days worth was in easy access with my passport etc. for check-ins, the rest was buried deeper into my rucksack. Card was for backup and incidentals (eg I had to buy a new pair of...

Has the Camino Frances become a victim of its own success?

Walked in May-early June last year and it was within my expectations given the increased post-covid numbers. The requirements to plan accommodation ahead by about 3 days was fine. Sarria onwards was the normal high volume, compounded last year by a corporate group of 450 walkers from across...

May/June or September/October on the Camino Frances?

I have just done the full route from SJPP from 2nd May to 11th June and the green spring colours were great. Despite all of the “dull and boring” comments that abound about the Meseta, in spring it is a smorgasbord of green shades punctuated by wild flowers.

    Biarritz to SJPP

Hi, used Express Bouricott in early May 2022. Easy service, waited for us as our flight was delayed. If they have several passengers landing at about the same time the price drops quite a bit.

Looking for accommodation recommendations in Leon

Had fun in the Hostel Covent Garden. Central location, quirky inside, but a really comfortable mattress and the chap who runs it is great!

Where are the May Francés pilgrims?

I started 2nd May and am now in Villar de Mazarife. Some others who like me are taking a steady 20km/day avg. plus some sight seeing days are also here. The young, fit and beautiful ones who started with us old cronies are now about 100km ahead.

    Help me remember an albergue

Definitely Granon - currently sitting next to a young lady who stayed there when we were in Granon a few days ago. After the Pilgrims mass they went upstairs to the loft to cook and sleep.

    The bad knee club

I am on the Camino currently and have met a 65 yr old with a quadruple bypass, two new hips and a new knee. He has made it all the way from SJPP to Estella in a week, and is planning on going all of the way. His heavy bag goes ahead and he walks with a day bag.
