    Atypical/memorable albergues on Camino Francés?

Michel, Both Gronze and caminodesantiago.consumer.es. give feedback from pilgrims. I think that both are in Spanish but even if you know very little you can pick out good vibes. Buen Camino Lydia

    Thunderstorms forecast for Roncesvalles area

Maybe good to remind pilgrims, especially first time ones, that Navarre decided a few years back to charge pilgrims needing rescue who had not obeyed signs warning of danger. Shortly afterwards two pilgrims from South America who had ignored the sign were charged €26.000 after they were rescued.

    Re: My First Camino

I know you did not ask for advice on this, but I feel it is important. On the Camino only one thing is really important, feet. In the heat our feet get very sweaty and then our skin gets wet and soft and blisters can be the result. . There are 1001 ways of dealing with blisters. However, in my...

    On line reservations for accommodations

I used to request the hospiladero/a if they would be so kind as to phone ahead for me to confirm my booking. they would realise that it was a long distance call for me but a local call for them. they were always very happy to do so. I would stress that it was to 'confirm' my booking. They...

How right your are Trecile. Having lived for almost 60 years in the last century I sometimes put 19xx. The first date I ever wrote was in my copybook in 1950.

How many times have you walked the Camino Frances (more than half way)?

Three times, first from Roncesvalles (4 trips) 1907 -1909, second time from Pamplona 1911 third time from San Juan Pied du Port ( 4 trips) 1912 -1916. I return because I love it, feel drawn to it, and feel so close to God on it. I now come from Tui to Santiago which is a really beautiful walk.

Safety for pre-dawn starts on the Camino Frances

Please please stay in a private room if you intend getting up at 4.00 am. I have suffered from sleep deprivation caused by people getting up in the middle of the night. Causing sleep deprivation to others is tantamount to torture. Please be kind and consider others.

Hi Tony, Buen Camino to you. May you have a safe and happy Camino. obviously I don not know where you have stayed before, but if you have never stayed in San Martin Pinario, which is just opposite the Northern door of the cathedral in Santiago can I suggest it as a great place to stay. They...

Camino awesome, Santiago not so much

Ian, Congratulations an completing such a long Camino. Thank God for your health and strength to be able to walk so far. What a pity that your experience in Santiago was not a good one for you, but coming into most cities after weeks of walking can be a culture shock. Of course there was a...

    English speaking pilgrims

Although I am Irish, the English language is my mother tongue. I have so often been humbled by how well other Europeans and those from further afield speak English. So often English is used as the common language. It is courteous of us when in such company, to speak a little slower than usual...

    RONCESVALLES first floor accommodation

I am laughing to myself as I read this thread.'Been there, done that, so often nearly crying with frustration having been woken up a few hours after getting asleep'. Newbys to this forum will realise that walking 20 or more kilometres is the easy part of the Camino. But haven't we all been...

Pilgrims dish of the day At SJDPP?

Luap, over the years as I walked the Camino alone I often just stood inside a cafe or restaurant and if I saw a person who was alone and obviously a pilgrim I would ask if I could join them. In every case they were delighted to have the company of another pilgrim, and we would have a very...

Camino #4 - From zero to hero (everything I learned so far and how you can walk 40+km as well)

Very impressive Tantalu, and lots of facts and advice. But as I have often said on this forum age matters and makes a big difference. Also height and length of arms. I for example have both short legs and arms, I could never reach a pocket in my backpack and yet for you it seems easy. 20...

Senior Newbies planning first Camino- advice?

You could use Booking .com and gronzé.com and onlypilgrim. These sites give users reviews and you can make your own decisions. another site is euroski however that is only in Spanish. I would advise you all to learn a bit of Spanish.. It weighs nothing to carry and can mean so much as you...

Does anyone recognize this name (owner perhaps) from an albergue/hostel?

Cstay, had the exact same situation during this week. I had booked at San Brigida in Hotanas and received a reply from Andreas who seemed to be in Alb Juan de Ypres. However all is sorted now. One person owns both Alb San Brigida and Alb. San Brigida Juan de Ypres. Both seem to be of very...

    Walking after knee replacements

On the subject of knee replacements, my tupence halfpenny is ' Go to a pre-op physio class as soon as the decision to operate is made and do the physio twice daily. To have strengthened the muscles makes a huge difference to your rate of recovery.

    Stress with finding accommodation

I understand the stress that being unsure of a place to sleep can cause. The first time that I booked ahead( after several years on the Camino) I was amazed at many buildings etc that I had very definitely passed twice before but had never seen because my head was bent as I struggled to get to...

    Heat, feet and water

Marky, thank you so much. I realise I had said the church was on the left hand side but in fact it was on the right hand side. Picture not exactly as I recall it, but then my family often argue with my 'very clear' recollections. It is the idea of it all that appeals to me so much. In our...
