A sad day on the Camino Frances today.

Yes, blue skies, sunny weather, low humidity is what I got. Actually along the whole camino Frances I had rain the first 3 days and 2 hours towards the end. Lillian

LIVE from the Camino soulful road | field notes from the camino (video) & update

Kim, I just watched all your videos and have been reinspired towards my next camino. I liked them all. LOVE

An unholy year on the Camino Frances

I do suspect that in years past, when there was no such thing as indoor plumbing and toilets were not invented and pilgrims walked by the tens of thousands, that poo was found all along the route. Can you imagine how nasty that must have been back then? I don't know what the answer is but I...

    hello from the camino

BenandSam, I too had soft tissue damage of my left ankle on the descents of Atapuerca. I was amazed at how this little ligament or tendon (whatever it was) could be so painful that it stopped me in my tracks. I hobbled into Burgos and then had to rest it 3 weeks (thankfully I have family and...

    new albergue in Moratinos!

Let's see if I got this straight.... besides your place, there is an albergue opening and as well a 2-star hostal? If so, I believe you have placed Moratinos on the map, Rebekah! :? LOVE

    Fear: the Return Home

I wonder how transformative it would be for the teenagers if they also went, maybe at a different pace than the parent. Young people need that kind of break as well, and the Camino offers a wonderful time. Lillian

    Where are all the Americans???

There are a bunch of couch potatoes and mindless consumers in Europe as well. Just because we are not there in record numbers does not mean we are not doing something over here. My trails are full of walkers, the parks full of people picnicing(?) and playing games, the tennis courts have...

No use trying to sleep... 3 hours 57 mins to go...

Melinda, you have probably just arrived and I bet you cannot wait to get to L'Esprit and start your hospitalera routines. Wish I was on the CF just to see you there. Yes, my pile is in the rucksack..... did it at 3am (hence my posting here, for I too am excited and cannot put myself to sleep)...

Can I indulge in a little pity party just for now?

Sorry to hear about what is going on. Yes it is tough. Don't know if you have done this, but airlines tend to be pretty understanding about health issues and travel. Ask them if a note from a doctor might help them change their mind and accommodate your needs. It worked for me before. Good...

'New Age' bores on the Camino

What resonates here to me is the judgment and criticism of these "New Age" people. If that is their religion then it is up to us to tolerate them along with everyone else's religions. If you find anyone's conversations a bore, like already said, move on. But try and not judge their beliefs...

I'm leaving for madrid next week ... a couple of questions .

I booked on Renfe, printed my ticket and traveled from Barcelona to Bilbao 3 days ago. No problems with it. Although I was in Barcelona when I booked it. So not sure if being here in Spain booking it makes a difference. No PIN was needed. And I used a US credit card. Lillian

    New entry on my blog

In whichever year it was, I could not give blood until 6 months after I arrived from Spain. Those were the rules. Coming from Europe during the mad cow scare kept me from donating. Lillian

    Waking up in refugios

If you take an alarm, take a vibrating one that no one else would hear. But, I found myself waking up to the rustling of people from 5am onward. I would fall back asleep until the next sound gets me. On and off until I get up. So chances are you don't need an alarm, others will wake you. By...

I give 5 euros. At father SanBlas' I gave 10. Felt like it. Lillian

If I had to do it over again ...

...on the Frances, I would take time to be a tourist, see parks, museums, historical sites, churches. ....on the Via, same as above, and also ask regarding trails that keep me from walking on the road. Mondays seemed to be the time I would arrive at historical places, ie Merida and museums...

any groups going in early may 2009??

One thing I also did was leave little notes in the albergues' pilgrim books. I saw notes from people of our forum who were there before me and one person from the forum was behind me, got my email, connected with me and we managed to meet up in Santiago. It was so cool. Smile Lillian

    Camino in April

Wow, Ginn, 43 days!! You can just mosey!! But if you find you are getting to the end quicker than expected, think about adding another route. How wonderful for you. And the time is near. I will be there in May....somewhere. Still deciding, Lillian
