Modest Private-Room Accommodations in Sahagun - Seeking Recommendations

I too stayed at el Albergue de la Santa Cruz. Six of us shared a bunk room for 6 in August, 2018. We got bocadillos from the nearby center of town and ate dinner in the courtyard of the albergue. The room had its own bathroom that the six of us shared. In the morning there was a decent donativo...

    sarria to santiago

It will be the busiest part of any of the caminos so even by covid standards you will find places to eat. I’ve read that you should have reservations at the albergues since they are operating at reduced capacity. Buen Camino!

What's the state of the Camino Francés right now - June 2021?

I didn’t see one in 2017 either. I do remember the place right before it that sold hand crafted iron goods - I have a scallop shell necklace I bought there I wear to this day!

Best location to rent for a month along Frances

Might be too big for what you want but Lugo struck me as both remote and connected at the same time. The Roman walls can't be beat. I think Astorga and Ponferrada are also good ideas.

Is anyone doing the Camino without any specific purpose

After walking with an Englishman for a couple of days he said, "why are you walking?" I had no answer. I still can't really put it into words. I have learned that there are no bad decisions on the Camino. I've tried to put that into practice off the Camino and I've gotten somewhat better at...

    Advice for a family

I second the Worldtowning Vlog recommendation- I watched a half dozen or so episodes and really got into it. I emailed them randomly just to tell them how much I enjoyed it and they wrote back. The dad has a drone with a fantastic camera and he and the mom and two kids are pretty cool.

    Calzadilla de la Cueza

I had planned to stay at Camino Real but I was ahead of schedule and arrived around 10:30 so I stopped to cancel my reservation in person and had one of the longest and most enjoyable second breakfasts ever! It's a good walk from Carrion with nothing between and no shade. Everyone I knew on the...

    Roncesvalles Albergue

Not unless it’s changed. You will get a paper dinner ticket when you arrive at the albergue. You might be allowed to pick at that time. I didn’t mind the table of four at Casa Sabina but it was my second time so I felt like I had had the La Posada experience which is also nice.

    Roncesvalles Albergue

Since you will definitely want to eat the pilgrim dinner and it’s just a matter of which restaurant they assign you then I think you should go ahead and prebook it. I’ve had the dinner there twice - in different restaurants by chance - and it was a great experience both times. I didn’t have...

Long Walks (more than 10 km) between Albergues

Walking is an important part of the Camino experience just as classes are an important part of the college experience but as you point out there is a lot more to enjoying those adventures!

Long Walks (more than 10 km) between Albergues

Great post! I can remember a few of those very well depending on how hot, cold, tired or hungry I was at the time. Funny but the ones I don't remember must have been under easier circumstances.

what if you cannot reserve/do not find a bed

You should also take a picture from time to time of the taxi advertisements along the Camino to have with you in case anything happens and you are not in a town. Different people advertise in different areas so the same number will not work for the whole length of the Camino.

    Recognize this pilgrim?

Lucky we can all go back and see everything for the first time again. I wish I had known who he was the first time around :)

    Recognize this pilgrim?

I can attest to the walking against the wind part. It was very foggy, wet and windy that day. Otherwise I would have spent more time with the statue. There’s always next time ...

    Recognize this pilgrim?

This statue is just after O Cebreiro. I just realized that the picture I took is the same statue as on the cover of a book from 2004 that my mother in law gave me. The staff is now broken off at the hand and the brickwork around the base seems different. Does anybody know the back story on this...

Places to stay on camino frances for a extra day

Logroño is the capital of La Rioja and right across the river from downtown you will find Bodegas Franco-Españolas which gives a good tour and wine tasting. I think Logroño might be the most underrated city on the Francés. It’s a great place for food, drink, relaxing and people watching in the...

    Buying a paper map

I can't help but I understand the issue. Each time I've gone I've copied three fold out pages from a Spanish roadmaps book and then taped them together to make one big detailed map of the area I'm going to cover. That way I can see my journey from start to finish. Good luck!

Thanks - with these great suggestions I can't go wrong!

    Communal dinner in Sarria?

Funny you mention orujo since there was another recent lively thread all about orujo. ;)
