    Monasteries

The bar at San Juan de Ortega is fab. Try the morcilla.

Is Templar Castle visible when coming into Ponferrada?

The books were there in May 2012. I spent several happy hours nosing round the castle. Sadly, all the people I was walking with were too set on the bed race to stop.

    Riots in Burgos?

Agreed. Take the river route into town.

Use of credit card on the Camino Francés?

Cash only everywhere except hotels in the major cities.

How much money should I need for the entire pilgrimage?

I had exactly the same problem in, uhhhh, Sahagun, I think. Went into the bank, and the very helpful girl behind the counter offered to help me. This meant her coming out and sticking the card in the slot in the machine. Unsuprisingly, it still didn't work. So she declared it faulty and...

    Negative Comments about Camino Frances

I think Francis' last paragraph sums up the difference between his perspective and that of the forum perfectly. For most people here, the camino is way outside their comfort zone. They've never hiked, never carried a pack, never slept in a dorm. Francis takes risks that would be outside most...

    Water on the Frances

I used water bottles, which I refilled from taps/fountains. When I return, though, I would buy bottled water between Burgos and Lyon, as lots of people got sick there. If you decide on a bladder, it's worth thinking about the practicalities of keeping it and the tube clean.

    altitude

Scruffy, that was my experience. People kept telling me about this terrible climb. Got to O'Cebreiro and was like, "That's it??" Seriously, if 1500m is a problem for you, it might be worth taking the Valcarlis route out of St Jean, as it tops out lower. By the time you get to the iron cross...

    altitude

The highest point on the camino is 1500m. That's lower than the level aeroplane cabins are pressurised to, and shouldn't pose an issue to anyone with healthy lungs and heart. If you're not in that category, then speak to your doctor before starting. I, too, live at sea level and didn't notice...

    Camino Zoos and Wildlife

Lots of red squirrels in the woods around St Juan de Ortega.

    Negative Comments about Camino Frances

I walked the Camino in 2012, and the tour de mont blanc in 2013 (FrancisT - check out the latter if you haven't - you might like it.). I agree with pretty much everything in the article, with one obvious exception: I loved every minute of it. The camino is not a hike through untramelled...

    What is Manjarin like now?

This might explain my experience. Stopped, had tea, gave a donation, fussed the cats. Asked the young lady behind he counter if I might stay. She asked Tomas. Now, my Spanish is very limited, but you don't need to understand the language to hear anger and aggression. She turned to me...

    Meseta

Likewise. I did actually stay in Moratinos, but didn't make the connection. Instead I was in an Italian-run albergue, and I'm afraid it wasn't the highlight of my Camino.

Women and the need to relieve oneself along the trail

I wore a skirt. It makes al fresco peeing really easy. It's even easier if you don't wear any knickers. (Is it wrong that I'm proud of my ability to squat with the pack on? Do take it off before going into a loo, though, cos otherwise it bangs on the cistern.) My top traveling toiletting...

Best route to take while walking with a seven year old.

I don't have kids, so take everything with a pinch of salt! My parents are very keen walkers and, every year, our family holiday was two or three weeks in Switzerland, hiking in the alps. This was from age 18 months (my brother) and age three (me). Up to 20 miles a day by the time we were...

Yoga on the Camino de Santiago?

I did! I have a photo of me practicing in the grand square outside the albergue in St Juan de Ortega. But I found I practiced much less than I expected. The weariness at the end of the day, the need to do laundry, and the draw of beer and hood company conspired against me.

    "I Love You" rock formation

The stone spiral are on the hills a few km before Burgos. There weren't words when I walked through last spring.

Can You Give Me An Estimate? :/

The airlines terms and conditions will be on it's website. Some tickets can't be changed. You want to fly on a different day? Tough. Buy another ticket. Often, these are the cheapest. Some can be changed, if there's availability, and if you pay a fee (a couple of hundred dollars would be...

Can You Give Me An Estimate? :/

Eight weeks. What happens with your air ticket will depend on the airline. As a rule, the more flexible tickets are more expensive.

    Anyone else get shot down?

Re: Anyone else get shot down? Then I think your first step is to speak with those people and with your husband to see if they are able and willing to have full charge of your kids whilst you're away.
