    Camino Francés in the 1980s

that was true of Spain in general, one of the things that's changed substantially since Franco's death. Young women in particular were not allowed out without a duenna! that was a later version. The guide was taken over by Randonnees Pyreneennes (which later became Rando Edns, now part of the...

    Camino Francés in the 1980s

see http://www.sasua.net/estella/articulo.asp?f=santiago2 for Javier Hermoso de Mendoza's detailed account of this pilgrimage and how it fitted in with the development of the modern camino (also a photo of Rene de la Coste-Messeliere, another pioneer, on horseback) Also around this time was...

    "Ancien chemin de Saint-Jacques"?

btw, I just looked in the old Everest guide, which mentions this very briefly. The 1998 English translation says: "you reach ... the village of Untto, meeting up with the path from St Jean le Vieux and St Michel Pied de Port". My previous post probably wasn't clear, but the 'ancien chemin' here...

    "Ancien chemin de Saint-Jacques"?

are we talking about the same route? The route Camino2014 refers to - at least as shown on IGN - is entirely on roads, albeit minor roads.

    "Ancien chemin de Saint-Jacques"?

this is based on the Roman road, the exact line of which no longer exists. The waystations/mansiones on this were Imus Pyreneus (foot of the Pyrenees) - the original St Jean (now St Jean le Vieux), where there is a small museum http://www.tourisme64.com/patrimoine-cu ... 0001M.html - and Summus...

how far did I really walk?

The accuracy of GPS is well-known and quantified: to quote the US government "the GPS signal in space will provide a "worst case" pseudorange accuracy of 7.8 meters at a 95% confidence level". A reasonable-quality GPS device should be accurate to within 3-5m in 'normal' conditions. Smartphones...

how far did I really walk?

but that will measure the distance travelled by the bicycle, which will not be the same as any given walker, as the walker will not follow the exact same line. On events like you mention, participants will keep roughly to the straight line, as they want to be competitive. Road distances are...

Brierley Guide on line in PDF

it's not a whole book, it's what they call 'preview', analogous to looking at a book in a shop before buying. "To help you decide whether you want to buy a Google eBook, you can in most cases preview a sample of the book's pages for free before purchase" Google do not themselves sell books, so...

    13 stages?

PS. The Codex does mention St Jean (le Vieux), not in the list of places but as one of the places where there was an accursed boatman. Interestingly, the reason Richard LH gave for sacking the place - and more particularly the castle - was because of the excessive tolls they charged (though...

    13 stages?

both the list of stages and the list of places in the Codex start at St Michel, at the foot of the pass ('pied de port') on the north side of the Pyrenees. The road followed is much the same as the Roman road, though for the Romans the pied de port, Imus Pyreneus, was what is now called St...

Want to buy a nice albergue?

here's some other options for you: in Herrerias - ideal for albergue, it says, tho calling it a 'casa' seems a bit of artistic licence. Gives asking price, tho note it's been on the market for a year now. http://forum.toprural.com/showthread.php?t=54148 http://leon.evisos.es/compra-venta-inmu...

    Statue in Burgos Cathedral

yes, that makes sense. So the bared knee is presumably not damaged/infected at all. St Roch is often depicted with an angel, tho when I look more closely at this image, it's clear the wings are attached to the figure depicted, not separate, so the figure is an angel. The scallops would seem to...

    Statue in Burgos Cathedral

yes, it'll be San Roque, tho he's generally pointing to the wounded knee. The wings will represent the angel (tho normally he's shown with his dog). Not sure about the fish http://saints.sqpn.com/saint-roch/

    ETA bomb in Burgos

    what does "o cebreiro" mean?

all names derive from something, though there's not always agreement on what :-) I looked this up a few years back, and came across a variety of possibilities, tho no-one seems to know for sure. Wikipedia http://gl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedrafita_do_Cebreiro quotes the most commonly given one...

All albergues to close for 15 days this winter?

more on this in El Mundo http://www.elmundo.es/elmundo/2008/08/2 ... 28276.html It's the Spanish Federacion that's calling for the albergues to be cleaned all at the same time. I've not seen mention of any response from the authorities!
